Individualizing treatment options in BDI
Psychiatric Times
Adherence, comorbidities, and treatment efficacy in bipolar I disorder were the themes discussed by Vladimir Maletic, MD, MS, and Andrew J. Cutler, MD, in a recent PsychView custom video series. “When we trained, we were taught there was a part of the brain that was responsible for depression and there was something wrong with this part of the brain,” said Cutler. “But we now know it’s much more complicated.”

It may not be long before we're all suffering from climate trauma
TIME Magazine
Nobody who lived through the 2018 California wildfire known as the Camp Fire is ever likely to forget it. The blaze, set off by a faulty power line in Butte County, in the northern part of the state, raged for 17 days, from Nov. 8 to Nov. 25, incinerating 240 sq. mi. of land, destroying more than 18,000 homes, and claiming 85 lives. By any measure, the Camp Fire was a traumatic event for those who experienced it. Now, a new paper published in PLOS Climate has determined exactly how traumatic it was for the survivors, offering fresh insight into the long-term psychological cost of extreme climate events.

Antipsychotic prescriptions rising among youths
Contemporary Pediatrics
An increasing trend in prescriptions of antipsychotics among pediatric patients, along with the indications associated with these prescriptions, was recently analyzed in a study published by The Lancet Psychiatry.
Although most antipsychotics are not approved for use in pediatric patients, concerns have arisen over an increase in antipsychotic prescriptions for children and adolescents. Antipsychotics can interact with children’s physical and psychological development, potentially having lasting consequences such as increased cardiometabolic risk.

Sublingual ketamine demonstrated to be safe, effective for patients with treatment-resistant depression
Pharmacy Times
Prior literature has suggested ketamine may be an alternative pharmacological intervention for patients with depression. It is often delivered via intravenous infusion, but IV is not cost effective and requires presence in a medical setting. Researchers found a solution in sublingual, rapid dissolving tablets that are off-label and for at-home use. A recent study found that novel SL ketamine is safe and effective for patients with treatment-resistant depression and treatment-resistant anxiety.

Body dissatisfaction found to be primary cause of eating disorders
News-Medical
Eating disorders are stereotypically associated with adolescents and young adults. Growing evidence, however, suggests that these conditions can occur at any time during a woman's lifespan, including at midlife. A new study finds that body dissatisfaction is a primary cause of eating disorders, especially during perimenopause. Study results are published online in Menopause, the journal of The North American Menopause Society.

Acts of kindness could be natural antidepressants
HealthDay News via U.S. News & World Report
People suffering from depression or anxiety may be able to help themselves by helping others – even in small ways, researchers report. In a recent study of 122 people with depression or anxiety symptoms, those who started fitting small acts of kindness into their day showed an improvement in their symptoms. And when it came to boosting feelings of social connectedness, those kind gestures worked even better than two techniques used in standard "talk therapy," the study found.
