Lessons learned from treating COVID-related anxiety
Psychiatric Times
As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, 2020 was a very challenging year. Concerns about contracting the infection, loss of income/employment, disruption of routines, physical isolation from friends and family, restriction of leisure activities, and school and daycare closures caused significant stress for patients and clinicians. Although the stress may not meet the diagnostic criteria for an anxiety disorder, the symptoms can affect quality of life.

ADAA Board Member
Prior to joining ADAA I wrote and produced several self-help audio programs including The Anxiety Solution Series, a 12-hour audio course, Stress Free, a compilation of six guided meditations, and The Personal Growth Series, a collection of seven hypnosis sessions. Since becoming a member of ADAA and being elected to their Board of Directors, I have completed two books: Break Free from Anxiety and The Emetophobia Manual. Although my practice in Los Angeles was focused on treating anxiety disorders, prior to joining ADAA, I did not know other therapists who shared the same specialty. Attending my first ADAA conference in 2013 changed that. The presentations filled the gaps in my knowledge, and I met and become friends with other experts in the field. Read more…

Raising Awareness: Hat by Hat
by David Miller
On December 3, 2018, I began residential treatment. It was an 11 week program that changed my outlook on life and allowed me to focus on mindfulness-chirping birds, eating a chocolate, taking a nap, and even having a great laugh!
During those 11 weeks at the treatment center, I met another patient named Louis. He is a gifted artist who had just begun to explore his artistic genius as his symptoms have made permanent employment a formidable challenge.

Poverty, depression, and anxiety: Causal evidence and mechanisms
Science Magazine
Mental equilibrium is essential for an economically productive life in both industrialized and developing countries. Accumulating evidence shows that mental ill-health and poverty tend to be traveling partners, but which is the cause? Ridley et al. reviewed the literature on natural and controlled economic experiments involving individuals living in poverty. The authors sought to resolve the mechanisms whereby poverty triggers mental illness and how mental illness compounds poverty. Their results reveal the benefits of cash support and of low-cost therapeutic interventions for those suffering from mental illness under poverty.
