September is National Suicide Awareness Month

September is National Suicide Awareness Month. Also known as Suicide Prevention Month, the month brings awareness to a topic not often talked about. We know that many in our ADAA community have been personally impacted by suicide. Did you know that on average, one person takes their life every 16.2 minutes and two-thirds of the people who die by suicide also struggled with depression? One way to help prevent suicide is to increase awareness about anxiety and depression and to help improve access to treatment. However, identifying depression can be difficult. Not all people who suffer from depression show signs. The first step in identifying someone who is suffering from depression and contemplating suicide is to see how serious the issue is. Talking to the person involved and asking about their thoughts will help decrease the trigger of suicidal action. Suggesting a counselor or treatment for depression might also help. ADAA’s community partners offer a broad range of resources to help – we invite you to share these with loved ones throughout this month and beyond.

Personal Stories of Triumph

ADAA Professional Member Ashley Smith, PhD shares:

“As a clinical psychologist, I probably think about suicide more often and in different ways than most. I’ve read the research. I’ve been trained to ask the hard questions. I am all too familiar with the frustrating gaps in our knowledge base: what causes it, who is at risk, how do we prevent it? I understand the stigma and misconceptions surrounding it, and I know, firsthand, the collateral damage that stems from it.”

You can read the rest of Ashley’s story here, and read how others are triumphing over anxiety and depression here.

Your story is important and has the power to help others in their mental health journey. We would love for you to submit a poem, video, artwork, or a story to be featured on ADAA’s website, in future issues of Triumph, and through our social media platforms. Your story can offer hope and encouragement and let others know they aren’t alone. Learn more here.

Question: Anxiety Attacks - What Can Help?

I was diagnosed with general anxiety disorder about a year ago. I sought treatment and after a couple sessions was doing much better. My anxiety only comes on when I feel time pressure such as wanting to leave to get to a place on time for rational and irrational events...such as being 15 minutes away from a location and being on schedule to get there early but all of a sudden I get an anxiety attack. It feels like an elephant is on my chest and my mood changes and makes me distant. Is there a medication I can talk to my doctor about that would help relieve these sudden onset symptoms? I was prescribed beta blockers before and they did absolutely nothing for me.

Answer: ADAA member David Rosmarin, PhD, ABPP

The best medication for anxiety is Exposure Therapy. What will happen to you if you’re late and have an anxiety attack? Probably not much. Anxiety is scary, but not dangerous. Read more.
