.ADAA NEWS
As we approach the end of 2020, we must acknowledge the mental health burden caused by the isolation, financial uncertainty, and grief of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many in our country are unemployed, or working longer hours while telecommuting, while also balancing childcare and combating the impacts of burnout. Research shows that since the start of the pandemic 40% of Americans have reported mental health issues, with 11% of American adults having seriously considered suicide.
It has been a long nine months, and as we look ahead to welcoming 2021, the ADAA Board and Staff recognizes that much work remains to be done, not just next year, but for many years to come to help our country heal. Our mission – now more critical than ever - is to #breakthestigma around mental health issues.
These are very challenging times, and people need to know that it is ok to ask for help. ADAA is here to offer free treatment and research resources such as our Find-a-Therapist database, our peer-to-peer online support groups, expert authored and hosted blog posts, webinars, and website content that provides tips and strategies for a broad range of anxiety disorders and depression.
These next few weeks, as we enter our final giving campaign of the year, we are turning to you - our supporters and friends - to help ensure that ADAA can continue its critical mission. You can help us change lives.
Anxiety disorders and depression are real, serious, and treatable. Your tax-deductible gift will help improve the lives of millions around the world. Please join us.
We wish you and yours a safe, healthy and warm holiday season and New Year.

- Hoarding, Stockpiling, Panic Buying: What’s Normal Behavior in an Abnormal Time? by Carol A. Matthews, MD
But what effect has the pandemic had on another common but often misunderstood problem – hoarding? The issue first received attention when people piled up paper towels, toilet tissue and hand sanitizer in their shopping carts at the start of the pandemic, leading some people to wonder whether they or a loved one were showing signs of hoarding disorder. Read more.
- Flatten the Fear with Facts: What is an Appropriate Level of COVID-19 Worry and the Steps You Can Take to Reduce Anxiety by Ken Goodman, LCSW
The patients I treat face their fears in small increments. They put doubt in one pocket and bravery in the other, and take gritty steps into uncertain territory. As they take those steps their anxiety rises but when done repeatedly, their fear settles and they report feeling a happiness they have not experienced since the coronavirus began. In order to take those steps, however, let’s reduce some of your worry with more facts. Read more.
- Mindfulness Meditation for Anxiety by Elizabeth Hoge, MD and Caroline Armstrong, BA
“Mindfulness” has become a bit of a buzz word in recent years. It’s not unlikely that you, or a friend or family member, may have tried out a meditation class, downloaded the app Headspace or Calm, or participated in a workplace-sponsored mindfulness training. So perhaps you already have a little bit of knowledge about mindfulness, which can be described as paying attention to one’s thoughts and feelings in a way that is kind, curious, and grounded in the present moment. - The Matrix is Already Here: Social Media Promised to Connect Us, but Left Us Isolated, Scared, and Tribal by Arash Javanbakht, MD
I’m a psychiatrist who studies anxiety and stress, and I often write about how our politics and culture are mired in fear and tribalism. My co-author is a digital marketing expert who brings expertise to the technological-psychological aspect of this discussion. With the nation on edge, we believe it’s critical to look at how easily our society is being manipulated into tribalism in the age of social media. Even after the exhausting election cycle is over, the division persists, if not widening, and conspiracy theories continue to emerge, grow and divide on the social media. Based on our knowledge of stress, fear and social media, we offer you some ways to weather the next few days, and protect yourself against the current divisive environment. Read more.

Personal Stories of Triumph from our Community

“Toxic Support – A Story of Art and Depression Awareness” by Yuliya Osyka
“Toxic Support” is a series of 12 illustrated posters dedicated to revealing the toxicity of phrases people say to someone with depression. This is a self-initiated social project, the idea for which came to me after experiencing the effects of depression myself as well as seeing them in a loved-one.
Most of us have heard some of these phrases or said them themselves. I am not an exception... on both fronts.
Having your feelings and/or the fact of their absence devalued and frowned upon because of something you can’t even control as a person with depression is like being forcefully muted and tied up in a tank filling up with water. Read more of Yuliya’s Story and view her posters.
“Handling Self Sabotage & Anxiety” by Antonio Liranzo
"I want to write this post to hopefully share some of my experiences with self-sabotage & anxiety. I published my first book, “Falling Angel : Rising Phoenix,” as a therapeutic release. I woke up one day and realized that my life was starting to go down a rabbit hole; I looked in the mirror and didn’t like the person that I was becoming; I started asking myself, Who am I? I believed that I was starting to lose the person that I was!
"Falling into partying and over socializing and ignoring my needs of mental health! I have GAD (General Anxiety Disorder); sometimes the thoughts in my head are so overwhelming that I can’t think straight, [and] sometimes going to work or just drinking and socializing and not sitting in my thoughts is the easier way out instead of dealing with them." Read more of Antonio’s Story.
Your story is important and has the power to help others in their mental health journey. We would love for you to submit a poem, video, artwork, or a story to be featured on ADAA’s website, in future issues of Triumph, and through our social media platforms. Your story can offer hope and encouragement and let others know they are not alone. Learn more here.

Raising Awareness Hat by David Miller
"On December 3, 2018, I began residential treatment. It was an 11-week program that changed my outlook on life and allowed me to focus on mindfulness-chirping birds, eating a chocolate, taking a nap, and even having a great laugh!
"During those 11 weeks at the treatment center, I met another patient named Louis. He is a gifted artist who had just begun to explore his artistic genius as his symptoms have made permanent employment a formidable challenge." Read more about how David founded Stigma with Style.
You Can Talk with Me About Mental Illness by Rebecca Rose
"Mental illness is so stigmatized in our society that many people neglect to share their struggles for fear of being criticized. This prolongs suffering and very sadly can result in very serious health problems or worse, suicide. My goal in speaking openly and candidly about my mental illness to show that it’s OK to reach out for help. I use my blog and social media platforms to share my experiences and connect with people who might be dealing with the same things. In November 2020, I started designing and selling merch to raise awareness and end the stigma surrounding mental illness with a portion of the profits going to mental health organizations like ADAA." Read more about Rebecca’s mental health journey.
