Geoscientists Canada has developed a one-day short course for university students to improve basic awareness about resources reporting and the role of the Qualified Person (QP). The course covers all resources reporting in mining and energy, and also speaks to water resources and environmental reporting. It is designed to be of benefit to all students regardless of their subsequent career direction.

Four innovative North Bay mining supply and service firms are the beneficiaries of more than $2.3 million in provincial funding.
Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli delivered the news and the goods from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund in North Bay.
Foraco Canada was the big winner. The Seymour Street drilling services company will employ the $1.4 million it received to purchase tools and equipment to expand the business by opening new underground core and percussive drilling divisions.

A proposed gold mine on the outskirts of Dryden could be the next operating mine in northwestern Ontario.
The Goliath Gold project, owned by Treasury Metals, could have construction begin by 2020 or 2021. It would take up to two years to construct the open pit mine, which would eventually become an underground operation.
"I'm pretty excited to get to that stage where things will start moving, and seeing what we've designed and what we've talked about for years, coming into fruition and supporting the community," said Mac Potter, the environmental superintendent for Treasury Metals.

Ron Stroh will be watching crews dig up dirt at the edge of his Elmira farm.
The chemical factory that borders his farm tainted the soil there years ago. This was only discovered in 2017 when soil tests found toxins exceeding Ontario farm standards.
The factory-funded remediation of his farm is the latest step in a long environmental cleanup that remains a decade or more away from its goal.

Janice Martell hasn't given up on the group of northern Ontario men she calls her miners.
She continues to collect documentation and research to prove the dust they were exposed to was toxic.
Four years ago the Sudbury woman began a quest to find out if McIntyre Powder, used in underground mining, was connected to health problems some miners, like her father, were experiencing. The substance was used from the 1940s until 1979. Workers were told they needed to inhale the powder before their shifts underground to help protect them from silicosis, an incurable lung disease.

A gauge of mining shares is extending gains after its best December since the financial crisis as investors flee to haven assets amid a slump in the broader equities market and a U.S government shutdown. The BI Global Senior Gold Valuation Peers jumped as much as two per cent recently, to the highest since May, with bullion set for a sixth straight advance.
