"Globally, the mining sector is obviously in a bit of a downturn," said Scott Boutilier, senior policy analyst with the Ontario Chamber of Commerce. "From an Ontario perspective, though, there are a lot of things we can be doing right now to position the industry for greater success in the future."

Mine expansion is in the cards for Richmont Mines' Island Gold Mine in northeastern Ontario.
The mid-tier gold miner recently reported its year-end and fourth quarter operating and financial results for 2015.
Annual production was 98,031 gold ounces — with 96,895 ounces sold — at an average realized gold price of $1,480 per ounce, for annual revenues of $143.7 million.

Guelph is far from Flint, MI, but ongoing media coverage of high levels of lead in the U.S. city's tap water has prompted some increased concern among residents of the Royal City.
"You can't compare Guelph water to Flint water," said Abby Spielmacher, water supply technician in the city's water services department. But she said there have been more inquiries about the city's Get the Lead Out program in the wake of news of the situation in Flint.

This nanometre-thin material will enable future applications such as "smart wallpaper" that could generate electricity from waste light or heat, and power a host of applications within the growing "internet of things."

Western Australia is the best mining jurisdiction in the world, while Saskatchewan is a close second.
That is the conclusion of Canada's Fraser Institute, which is released its annual Survey of Mining Companies recently. The survey, which collects feedback from hundreds of mining professionals, tries to measure how resource potential and government policy affect mining investment in 109 countries.

A new survey of mineral deposits in the area could lead to a spike in exploration in the northwest, according to Smithers Exploration Group president Rob Maurer.
Non-profit organization Geoscience B.C. last year used aerial magnetic surveys to detect concentrations of minerals in an area between Terrace, Kitimat and Smithers, including sites that had not been surveyed since the 1960s.
