To mark World Water Day, Ontario's government is working for the people to protect the water quality and ecosystems of the Great Lakes as part of its commitment in the Made-in-Ontario Environment Plan. On April 23, Rod Phillips, Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, will convene the Great Lakes Guardians' Council, in memory of Josephine Mandamin, to discuss emerging issues around the Great Lakes. The council meeting will address excess road salt and sewer overflows into our waterways and inform the government's review of Ontario's Great Lakes Strategy and the negotiation of a new Canada-Ontario Great Lakes Agreement.

Federal environmental regulators have approved Treasury Metals' technical draft of its Goliath Gold Project in northwestern Ontario.
The Toronto mine developer reported that the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency accepted their submission on March 14.
Under the permitting process, there will a final round of public commenting for 30 days followed by a minister's decision within 60 days on whether or not to proceed with the open-pit and underground mine project.

As Newmont Mining readies to buy Goldcorp, Timmins has transferred some of the mining rights of the historic McIntyre mine back to the company.
Council also renewed its lease with the mining company for the Tisdale transfer station and cleared up minor land transfers.
When Pamour Porcupine Mines transferred the McIntyre Community Centre to the city back in 1981, a report from clerk Steph Palmateer says part of the mining rights were also "inadvertently" transferred. Those rights have been transferred back to Goldcorp.

World Water Day was celebrated on March 22 and as a way to recognize this day, all month long, residents and schools in Greater Sudbury have been invited to tour either the Drinking Water Treatment plant or the Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Officials say, over the last few years, hundreds of Greater Sudbury residents of all ages have taken part in a variety of tours to learn about the science behind the water we drink and how it is prepared and filtered.
These tours are free of charge and are available in English and French.

A major Greenland glacier that was one of the fastest shrinking ice and snow masses on Earth is growing again, a new NASA study finds.
The Jakobshavn glacier around 2012 was retreating about 1.8 miles and thinning nearly 130 feet annually. But it started growing again at about the same rate in the past two years, according to a study in Nature Geoscience. Study authors and outside scientists think this is temporary.
