APGO's Pilot Mentoring Program
APGO
We have started the work of matching mentors and mentees. We thank our current pool of mentors for generously volunteering their time to share their insights and expertise with our newly minted P.Geo.s, geoscientists-in-training and geoscience students. We have a number of mentees who need mentors from mineral and exploration industry. At the same time, we have experienced environmental geoscientists who are available as mentors to GITs and geoscience students who want to pursue a career in the environmental field. If you are interested in participating in this pilot program as a mentor or mentee, please email Marilen Miguel at mmiguel@apgo.net.

Mining program reaches training milestone

More than 1,000 workers have achieved national certification through the Canadian Mining Certification Program, according to the Mining Industry Human Resources Council (MiHR).
Occupations covered by the program include underground miner, surface miner, minerals processing operator and diamond driller.
"This milestone is representative of our industry's growing commitment to a highly skilled and consistently trained workforce and a shift toward a national, collaborative approach to skills and competencies that spans provincial borders," Ryan Montpellier, MiHR's executive director, said in a press release.

Companies recognized for mining safety

Supervisors from mining projects in and around Timmins gathered at the Dante Club recently for the Mine Safety Awards, which recognize the safety records of those working in an industry where life-threatening hazards are just part of the job.
"Tonight is about celebrating the achievement of individual supervisors who have had numerous safety shifts without any lost-time incidents," explained Laura Krupka of the Porcupine Northeastern Ontario Mines Safety Group.
Study of last summer's Burlington flood recommends $3.2 million in infrastructure upgrades
Inside Halton
Halton is taking steps to hopefully prevent the severe basement flooding that occurred in Burlington during last summer's torrential storm.
Phase one of a two-phase study has now been completed and the region's Planning and Public Works Committee recently recommended spending up to $3.2 million on various infrastructure improvements recommended by a consultant to reduce the potential for future basement flooding from sanitary sewer backups in seven high-risk areas.
CT scan tech used to check soil health

The penetrometer has been the primary instrument for measuring soil compaction since its introduction in 1905.
More recently, Scandinavian soil scientists have used hospital CT scans for a more accurate measurement to clearly depict and quantify soil structures.
One of the pioneers in this area is Dorthe Wildenschild, a researcher in Oregon State University's chemical, biological and environmental engineering department.

Cliffs Natural Resources completes costly exit from Ontario's Ring of Fire
The Globe and Mail
U.S.-based Cliffs Natural Resources is set to sell its Ring of Fire assets to a small Canadian company for a fraction of the cost, a bitter end to the American miner's foray into Northern Ontario. Noront Resources will pay $20 million cash for Cliffs' chromite deposits, less than four per cent of the $550 million Cliffs paid to acquire and develop the properties.

Pele partners with Chinese company on rare earth metals project

Pele Mountain Resources and Chinese company Sheng Kang Ning (SKN) have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop a rare earth metals processing facility in Elliot Lake.
Pele and SKN, a mining investment company, are aiming to jointly develop a monazite-processing firm on the site of Pele's proposed Eco Ridge Mine Rare Earth and Uranium Project in Elliot Lake.
Geologists set to update land maps between Iqaluit and Pangnirtung

Federal government scientists will survey the geology and landscape of a large area between Iqaluit and Pangnirtung this summer.
The Geological Survey of Canada and Natural Resources Canada will share their plans and goals with the public at the Nunavut Research Institute in Iqaluit.
Surveyors will cover an area stretching from Clearwater Fiord, just west of Pangnirtung, to Nettilling Lake in the west, and south to Sylvia Grinnell Lake.
Coal industry's decade-long drop in productivity hits reverse

Years of declining efficiency in the coal industry may be finally coming to an end, especially in the U.S., where miners based in the country's top producing regions have stabilized or even increased productivity at both surface and underground coal operations in the past two years, a study shows. According to SNL Energy's latest report, coal mine productivity has increased even in regions where output has fallen, such as in Central Appalachia, where most of the U.S. coal is produced.
New project launched in Europe to design and build robotic underwater mining prototype
Mining Technology
Damen Shipyards Group has launched a new 42-month research and development project to design and build a robotic underwater mining prototype, along with related launch and recovery equipment.
Launched as part of the Horizon 2020 program, the Viable Alternative Mine Operating System (VAMOS) project looks to mine unexploited mineral resources.
