McEwen Mining is making its first foray into Northern Ontario with the completion of its friendly takeover of Lexam VG Gold and its Timmins exploration properties.
Headed by mining magnate Rob McEwen, the Toronto mid-tier miner announced the successful completion of the acquisition on April 27.

A new method of testing exploration coal samples could not only be less harmful to the environment, it could also result in a more accurate assessment of how economically viable coal projects are.
The Canadian Carbonization Research Association (CCRA) and Geoscience BC will this month launch a research project to assess the effectiveness of a water-based cleaning process for washing exploration samples of B.C. metallurgical coal used in the steel-production process to determine coal and coke quality key considerations in evaluating the economic feasibility of coal deposits.

This year marked the 25th anniversary the Westray coal mine disaster in Nova Scotia, where 26 coal miners were killed in a methane gas explosion. Members of the Timmins and District Labour Council and their supporters gathered at the Porcupine Miners Memorial at 11 a.m. on Friday for the annual observation of a moment of silence for all those who died on the job in Timmins and across Canada.

At least two buildings remain closed in the Yukon after Monday's pair of strong earthquakes rattled the region.
So far, more than 100 aftershocks some as strong as magnitude 5.7 have been recorded across northern B.C., the Yukon, and the Alaskan Panhandle since the quakes.

Two-thirds of Canada's electricity supply now comes from renewable sources such as hydro and wind power, the National Energy Board said in a report released recently.
Renewable energy production jumped 17 per cent between 2005 and 2015. The portion of all electricity in Canada generated by renewables is now 66 per cent, up from 60 per cent a decade earlier.

Mine rescue teams in seven districts across Ontario, including Timmins and Kirkland Lake districts, will test their emergency response knowledge and skills in District Mine Rescue Competitions May 10 to 12.
Six teams and equipment technicians from the Timmins and Kirkland Lake districts will compete at the Archie Dillion Sportsplex in Timmins.
