APGO
The AGM & Conference page is now posted on the APGO website highlighting the events of the day and online registration. This year's conference will focus on risk management. APGO has brought in experts to present on how organizations can build and sustain resilience by effectively managing risks as a result of crisis, serious incidents and bribery and corruption. Make sure to book June 14 as your professional development day and network with other professionals in the geoscience community.

On May 2, 2018, APGO held a networking event in Ottawa hosted by South East Councillor, Paul Hubley, P.Geo. Guest speaker Dr. Stewart Hamilton delivered a great talk on the advantages of wide-spectrum geochemical sampling of groundwater as beyond "water quality data." APGO gratefully acknowledges Dr. Hamilton for providing his time and expertise at the event. Many thanks also goes to Paul Hubley for hosting the event on behalf of APGO. Lastly, we would like to thank our members who came out to the event to exchange knowledge and make meaningful connections.

Eira Thomas has discovered diamonds in the far north, co-founded mining companies and sat on a dozen boards — including Canada's most valuable energy company.
So the 49-year-old was a little taken aback when an investor recently suggested she needed to hire an engineer as chief operating officer to back her up in the executive suite. She was, after all, only a geologist. "I'm 30 years in this business," said Thomas, who took over as chief executive officer of Vancouver-based Lucara Diamond Corp. in February.

Mineral exploration can involve a fair amount of science that helps geologists guess where precious metals might be buried.
But at the end of the day, it also involves poking a lot of holes in the ground, at great expense, hoping to hit a deposit of gold or zinc or copper. Thanks to the work of scientists at the Triumf particle accelerator, mining companies now have a new high-tech tool available that can paint a 3-D image of what's underground so that they can do a whole lot less drilling.
