This is a reminder that the application for the APGO Education Foundation Scholarship Program that supports post-secondary students entering their fourth year of geoscience studies closes this Friday, May 18, 2018. The Foundation will award two scholarships of $5,000 each.

The Ontario Chamber of Commerce will lobby the provincial government to maintain the current mining tax rates, thanks to the efforts of the Timmins Chamber of Commerce.
The policy was one of three presented by the Timmins Chamber and adopted by its provincial counterpart during the organization's annual general meeting last month in Hamilton.

Petrolia Topic
The Town of Petrolia launched operations at its new $21 million wastewater facility with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by local dignitaries on May 7.
Mayor John McCharles said with the facility up and running, the gates are now open to further development in Petrolia.
"This is the town's largest infrastructure project, ever," said McCharles. "The old plant was at its capacity and this represents a big step forward." McCharles said the project also garnered the largest amount of grant money Petrolia has ever received from the federal and provincial governments.

A northwestern Ontario First Nation in the Greenstone area has reached a tentative agreement with an area mining company over a project that community leadership says will be "generational."
Members of Long Lake 58 First Nation are scheduled to vote in June on the agreement-in-principle reached between the community's leadership and Greenstone Gold Mines over its Hardrock project.

Team Tahoe has once again won the Timmins District Mine Rescue competition.
The 2018 competition event was held at the Archie Dillon Sportsplex. Also competing were Kidd Operations and Goldcorp Porcupine Gold Mines.
The winning results were announced at the annual mine rescue dinner.
This is the second consecutive year for the Tahoe Resources crew to win the event under the leadership of team captain Adam Weagle and team coach Jim Davis.

If the Ontario Liberals don't return to power after the June 7 election, a local citizen group will be well-positioned to get some action on their concerns over water wells in the north Chatham-Kent area.
With less than a month before Ontarians go to the polls, Water Wells First has received a written commitment from the leaders of four political parties — The Progressive Conservatives, the New Democrats, the Green Party and the Trillium Party — a health hazard investigation will be conducted regarding black shale particles that have clogged water wells in the Chatham and Dover Township areas where wind turbines operate.

Retired miners who previously reported potential health effects from exposure to aluminum mine dust were recently invited to a follow-up session at the Ramada Inn in Timmins.
"Whether it did harm or not, these guys were subjected against their will to a public-health experiment and I think in many ways, it was industrial genocide when you look at the harm these workers experienced," said Janice Martell, the founder of the McIntyre Powder Project who helped to co-ordinate an intake clinic with the Occupational Health Clinics for Ontario Workers in Timmins two years ago.

Exceptional safety standards have earned De Beers Canada's Victor Mine two accolades from separate industry organizations. The Ontario-based mine — which is scheduled to close early next year — received the awards for achievements related to health, safety, and injury prevention.
The first of the two was granted last month at the Mining Health and Safety Conference in Sudbury, ON. Presented by Workplace Safety North, the Workplace Excellence Award honours high performance in health and safety.
