A new Laurentian University industrial research chair position in bio-mining, bio-remediation and science communication has the potential to kickstart a new industry in Sudbury that could create hundreds, or even thousands of jobs, said the director of the Vale Living with Lakes Centre.
"It's not an exaggeration to say there will be an entire industry built around this," said Laurentian professor John Gunn, who is also the Canada Research Chair for Stressed Aquatic Systems. "The demands are so big."

Premier Kathleen Wynne took some time off from her busy schedule at the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities conference recently to visit the Kidd Operations Mine north of Timmins, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary since opening.
Wynne was given a tour of the above-ground part of the facility and was even given the chance to pulverize a boulder using one of the mine's remote-controlled rock breakers. After her tour, she addressed a room full of Kidd Operations employees to congratulate them on their half century of operating in Timmins.

The provincial environment minister has given Durham and York Regions nine months to find a way to reduce phosphorus from a sewage treatment plant "to the lowest achievable level."
Glen Murray sent the Regions, the co-owners of the Duffins Creek water pollution control plant in Pickering, a letter ordering them to hire an independent water expert to conduct a phosphorus reduction action plan at the plant.

Vancouver-based Pure Gold Mining has found more gold at its Madsen Gold Project near Red Lake.
The company said in a news release that its latest exploration program produced drill cores testing as high at 20.1 grams of gold per tonne of rock over 2.9 metres.
"Our winter drill program at Russet South (mineralized area) has successfully extended outcropping mineralization discovered in 2015, with results continuing to support the potential for Russet South to provide near-mill (gold) resources in the future," said company president, Darin Labrenz.

An efficiency study is being planned for Brockton's Waste Water Treatment Plant.
Director of Operations Colin Saunders says there are several things they hope to accomplish.
"We are looking at different improvements, such as disposing of bio-organic waste, generating electricity off gases, a new digester roof, and just overall optimization of the plant as far as infrastructure," he says.

Timmins Mayor Steve Black told top government officials that if hydro rates are not discounted for new industrial projects, Northern Ontario would be losing more business to the province of Quebec.
Black said it is a real concern involving a real company ready to invest in Timmins and Black said he "would hate to lose this project."
The mayor was speaking to a group of Ontario cabinet ministers who took part in the traditional "bear-pit session" at the annual conference of the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities, which was held at the McIntyre Community Building in Timmins recently.

An application is under review in Chicago that would see 10 million gallons of water diverted daily from the Great Lakes to supply Waukesha, WI.
Representatives from Ontario and Quebec are meeting with their counterparts from eight states bordering the Great Lakes to speak to a discussion draft released by the governing Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Water Resources Regional Body.
