Minute fossils pulled from remote Arctic Canada could push back the first known appearance of fungi to about one billion years ago — more than 500 million years earlier than scientists had expected.
These ur-fungi, described on recently in Nature, are microscopic and surprisingly intricate, with filament-like structures. Chemical analyses suggest that the fossils contain chitin, a compound found in fungal cell walls.

Most of the water used by people in Egypt comes from the Nile River, which originates from precipitation over mountainous areas in the Ethiopian highlands. In areas far from the Nile River Valley, however, where water is scarce and the population is growing, groundwater is the only available freshwater resource. Knowing how much water is available in the groundwater aquifers and how fast it is being replenished is vital for providing the population with water for drinking and irrigation. Determining the age of water sources helps in those calculations.

Thousands of people are expected to roll through the upcoming Canadian Mining Expo.
The Big Event is returning to the McIntyre Community Centre in Timmins June 5 and 6, and will feature more than 400 displays. "The event has grown so large you can't get a motel here in Timmins or a hotel, and you can't get a motel or hotel in Cochrane, so it's getting very, very large. And it's a good thing," said Glenn Dredhart, president and CEO at Canadian Trade-Ex, which hosts the show.

A Laurentian University-based research corporation will get almost $700,000 in federal money to help communities adapt to climate change.
Sudbury MP Paul Lefebvre, Parliamentary Secretary to Amarjeet Sohi, Canada's minister of Natural Resources, announced funding of more than $680,000 for the Mining Innovation Rehabilitation and Applied Research Corporation, or MIRARCO.
MIRARCO will use the money to pay for two projects that will help Ontario adapt to climate change.

Work on a series of water infrastructure projects to better protect Kitchener, ON, from potential flooding are getting underway in the city west of Toronto.
The federal government announced just shy of $50 million in funding for the slew of construction jobs, adding to $72 million pledged by the local government.
The Grand River snakes through Kitchener producing an inherent risk of flooding, but the latest stormwater upgrades aim to reduce the number of people at highest risk by about 75 per cent.
