Ontario is supporting mineral exploration work by junior exploration companies and providing training opportunities for new and potential prospectors.
The province is partnering with the Ontario Prospectors Association and announced a $5 million investment, through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation, to support the delivery of the Junior Exploration Assistance Program in the spring.
Following the program's first round of applications the Ontario Prospectors Association has committed to support 32 exploration projects across Northern Ontario.

The Long Lake Stewardship Committee says it is pleased with plans to rehabilitate the lake despite some setbacks and delays.
Stephen Butcher, the stewardship committee's chair, said the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines and its partners had initially planned to begin rehabilitation work in 2016, but that has been pushed back to 2018.
The ministry says it expects the work to be completed by 2020.

Kirkland Lake Gold of Toronto has a robust underground drilling program underway at its Macassa mine in Kirkland Lake, especially with the discovery of a new gold zone along the '04 Break.
Drilling in the new zone will continue throughout this year and next in the hope of defining a mineable resource above the 3,400 level. Production from that area could begin in 2017 or 2018.

Timmins Press
Timmins city hall and the Porcupine Health Unit issued a joint news release recently advising there are elevated levels of heavy metals in the Hollinger Park. This includes antimony, arsenic and lead, said the release.
These metals are usually associated with historical mining and metal refinery practices. In high concentrations, such metals can pose a health risk.
"They are not present at levels that would be expected to result in adverse health effects to park users. The city will be doing further testing to determine what additional remedial action is required," the joint news release claimed.

The ink was barely dry on the deal to combine Tahoe Resources with Lake Shore Gold when company officials outlined plans to boost gold production in Timmins.
Tony Makuch, president of Tahoe's Canadian operations, as well as Tahoe executive chair Kevin McArthur and Tahoe president and COO Ron Clayton, spoke in Timmins about their goal to increase gold production at the Lake Shore Gold Division from about 180,000 ounces of gold to 250,000 in four years.

Victoria University of Wellington is leading two major scientific drilling investigations in New Zealand and Antarctica as part of the world's biggest geoscience project, the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP).
Starting in late 2017, the IODP's research ship JOIDES Resolution will be based in New Zealand for a year to undertake five scientific expeditions.
Researchers from Victoria University will lead two of the expeditions, with participants likely to include scientists from GNS Science, NIWA and New Zealand universities, and experts from around the world.

The first comprehensive study of the content of rare earth elements in coal ashes from the United States shows that coal originating from the Appalachian Mountains has the highest concentrations of scarce elements like neodymium, europium, terbium, dysprosium, yttrium and erbium that are needed for alternative energy and other technologies. The study also reveals how important developing inexpensive, efficient extraction technologies will be to any future recovery program.
