Now that it has $9 million from the provincial and federal governments, the City of Windsor can move forward on 13 projects to prevent future basement flooding.
The projects include assessments at the Pontiac and St. Paul Pumping Stations, upgrades at the Lou Romano Water Reclamation Plant, finishing a city-wide study on the condition of sewers, and projects to replace combined sewers on several Windsor streets.

Mine rescue volunteers from Goldcorp Canada Musselwhite Mine earned more than gold hard hats from Ontario Mine Rescue, a part of Workplace Safety North, as the overall winners of the 68th annual Provincial Mine Rescue Competition in Goderich.
Goldcorp Musselwhite Mine, a fly-in/fly-out mine approximately 480 kilometres northwest of Thunder Bay, also won the Firefighting Award and the Special Equipment Award during the closing banquet. The team won the Red Lake District competition in Red Lake in May.

Toronto's North American Palladium has announced plans to boost production by resuming surface mining at the Lac des Iles palladium mine over the next 9.5 years. The recent feasibility study anticipates a mining rate of 37.7 million tonnes over the mine life with an average grade of 2.21 g/t palladium containing 2.58 million oz. The milling rate will be 12,250 t/d, producing 237,000 payable oz. per year at full production.

The Ontario government is clamping down on the bottled-water system by increasing the price charged to companies, but critics say the move doesn't go far enough.
Starting Aug. 1, water bottlers will pay $503.71 for every million litres of groundwater taken, compared to the previous fee of $3.71, according to a government press release issued recently.
Environment Minister Glen Murray said Ontario is taking steps to protect its water resources as the impacts of climate change become more apparent.

Canadian bullion producer IAMGOLD, is selling a 30 per cent interest in its Côté Gold project, located in the Abitibi gold belt in Ontario, to Japan's Sumitomo Metal Mining in a deal worth $195 million.
As part of the transaction, the Japanese miner — the Asian nation's No. 1 gold producer — will become IAMGOLD's partner in the project, which is currently in its pre-feasibility study phase.

The University of British Columbia Okanagan is getting $1.4 million in federal funding to research irrigation and its effect on greenhouse gas emissions.
The school is one of the beneficiaries of Ottawa's new $27 million Agricultural Greenhouses Program, which is supporting 20 research projects.
The funding boost comes amid renewed attention on climate change shortly after the U.S. pulled out of the Paris climate agreement.
