Greetings to all members. The attendance was very good for the AGM, which is much appreciated. We were also host to the Geoscientists Canada's AGM, which was enlightening and productive.
I was asked just before the AGM regarding what challenges does PGO face this coming year. I have the benefit of perspective after being on council for over a decade and the past challenges. It's interesting that the more things change the more they stay the same. For example, great strides have been made regarding Enforcement and Compliance (E & C) but it is always a relentless pursuit. There is always hope we can make a difference in government policy and I am pleased to say we probably have made greater strides in the past year than we have made in the previous 5 (more likely 10 years) and we want to keep this rolling. Finally, governance which never ends simply because it is all about making what we do better.
Summer is tomorrow so enjoy your field work and vacations. Work and play safe.
See you soon.
Regards,
Milan Situm, P.Geo.

PGO’s Award Panel is pleased to announced this year’s recipient of the Award of Merit — Dr. James M. Frankin. This award is given to a deserving individual member who, during the course of their career, has made significant contributions to the geoscience profession. Dr. Franklin’s countless achievements and generosity in sharing knowledge and educating both geoscientists and the public made him highly deserving of this recognition. Congratulations, Dr. Franklin! City of Ottawa officials had a new tool at their disposal during this spring's flooding: A mapping program that showed the danger each additional centimetre of water could pose to buildings and infrastructure.
Laila Gibbons, director of roads and parking services, said the predictive mapping tool contributed to the decision to declare a state of emergency after the Ottawa River Regulation and Planning Board released its forecast in late April.
"When we put [the forecast] into our mapping program to see what that was going to look like, there are some areas across the city that were actually going to see [damage] beyond the one-in-100-year or the one-percent storm," Gibbons said.

The land package containing Red Pine Exploration's Wawa gold project hosts numerous historic mines that in their heyday produced more than 120,000 oz. of gold.
The largest gold deposit Red Pine has identified so far on the property, two kilometres southeast of the town of Wawa, is called Surluga, and recently the company updated a 2015 resource estimate, and marked an increase in grade, quality and continuity of the gold zones.
The new resource also supports a shift from an open pit development plan to a high grade underground model, the company says.

NASA's Mars InSight lander and Curiosity rover have been doing a lot of skygazing and they sent back some pretty impressive images of clouds.
It's already a known fact that it doesn't rain on Mars, but CNET writes that we might be a little closer to figuring out how can this cold Red Planet have such interesting cloudy days.
