A coalition of over 50 environmental, First Nations, and community organizations from Canada and Alaska are asking Canadian Energy and Mines ministers to take immediate action to prevent further damage from waste dams and pipelines ruptures.
In a letter addressed to the ministers from across Canada, who are finishing a meeting in Halifax, the group said that changes to mine waste management policies are urgent, especially after the failure of the Mount Polley tailings site in British Columbia last year.

Royal Gold's RGLD fully-owned subsidiary RGLD Gold AG has entered into a $175 million purchase and sale agreement with New Gold for a percentage of the gold and silver produced from the Rainy River Project in Ontario. Per the agreement, Royal Gold will make two advance payments of $100 million, at closing, and $75 million, once capital spending on the project is 60 per cent complete, to New Gold.

A plan to upgrade London's largest wastewater treatment plant instead of building a new one will save millions of dollars and take a fraction of the time originally expected to complete, a city councillor said recently.
"This is a really good news story," said Ward 4 Coun. Jesse Helmer.
The civic works committee gave its blessing this week to a staff plan to expand and upgrade the Greenway wastewater treatment plant at a cost of $38 million.

Gowest Gold has entered an agreement with Crown Mining to acquire mining claims adjacent to the past-producing Hallnor Gold Mine.
Under the agreement, Gowest would acquire 100 per cent interest in four patented claims totalling 64 hectares located in Whitney Township near Timmins. The claims to be acquired by Gowest adjoin the north and northwest boundary of the Hallnor property and lie approximately one kilometre northwest of the Hallnor Gold Mine.

Three contracts have been awarded for Randle Reef sediment remediation project in Hamilton, ON. According to a release from the federal government, the first stage of construction contract was awarded to McNally Construction, which will construct the engineered containment facility. It will be about six hectares in size, and contain the most highly contaminated sediments at the site.

NASA researchers have studied the aquifer beneath the Coachella Valley and concluded that while flows of imported water have helped boost groundwater levels in places, much of the aquifer has continued to decline.
Scientists with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory analyzed trends in the measurements of groundwater levels in wells between 1960 and 2013.
