APGO 2013 Annual Conference and AGM
APGO
Held on June 13 in Toronto, APGO's annual conference and AGM received very positive reviews from the over 160 attendees, many of whom responded to an on-line survey. 91.7 per cent of respondents reported that the event met their expectations with 94.4 per cent indicating that the format was either excellent (36.1 per cent) or good (58.3 per cent).

Speed mentoring session at the AGM

One of the sponsored activities during the past AGM in June was a speed mentoring session. Firstly I would like to thank the PDAC for sponsoring this session by reserving the room for the morning. We had 28 students show up and they were greeted by myself and five veteran members. We provided breakfast and lunch to all. I would like to thank Della Berwanger, Bruce Hietkamp, Geoffrey Chinn, Robert Tossel and Wally Rayner for their participation.

Moss Lake PEA posits $440 million cash flow

Moss Lake Gold Mines of Toronto says the preliminary economic analysis of its Moss Lake gold property 100 kilometres west of Thunder Bay point toward a project that will have an after tax cash flow of $440 million during a 10-year mine life. The project is estimated to have a net present value of $196 million at a 5 per cent discount rate after taxes.
Promoting mining careers to youth

A new website has been developed with the goal of getting youth in the region interested in a career in mining. Oshki-Pimache-O-Win has developed the website, which includes videos, pictures and a game. Oshki-Pimache-O-Win e-learning coordinator Gordon Kakegamic says their goal was to appeal to a younger audience.

Scientists have gained the first quantitative insights into electron transfer from minerals to microbes by studying that transfer in a nature-inspired, protein and iron-based nanoparticle system. Iron plays a crucial role in environmental biogeochemistry. It readily exchanges electrons with microbes, transforming from more soluble Fe(II) to less soluble Fe(III). By studying that exchange, researchers better understand iron cycling in the environment and how iron cycling, carbon cycling, and microbial activities are connected.

How quakes trigger methane stores

Earthquakes can rip open sub-sea pockets of methane, a highly potent greenhouse gas, according to a study by German and Swiss scientists. Quake-caused methane should be added to the list of heat-trapping carbon emissions that affect the world's climate system, although the scale of this contribution remains unclear, they said.

Shares of Energizer Resources almost doubled recently after reporting greater than 99.9 per cent graphitic carbon from a finished concentrate of its Molo flake graphite deposit in Madagascar, completed as part of a series of preliminary metallurgical tests to enhance both the operating and capital costs presented in an economic study from January.
