New research out of Laurentain University could lead to a win-win situation for the mining and the forest industries.
PhD student Jessica Arteaga is looking into using wood sludge to remediate mine tailings.
The sludge consists of woody fibres produced as a byproduct of creating pulp. Arteaga said she hopes mixing the sludge into mine tailings will create a soil that plants can grow in.

Residents of Espanola and Blind River will benefit from improvements to their drinking and wastewater management systems thanks to funding from the government of Ontario through the Small Communities Fund.
Espanola will see the replacement of existing sewer lines to limit ground water infiltration and reduce the wastewater treatment costs.
In addition, the water main's cast iron will be replaced to ensure cleaner drinking water.

Canada's Avalon Rare Metals, until now mostly known for its incursion in the rare earths market, has kick off its $750,000 pilot plant program at the miner's Separation Rapids lithium project, located near Kenora, ON.
The facility, said the company, will provide a trial of the new lithium minerals process flow sheet developed at the bench scale over the past year.
A total of 30 tons of crushed ore will be shipped to a laboratory in Germany for processing to produce a minimum of one ton of pure lithium mineral (petalite) concentrate, Avalon added.

Finland's Outotec has acquired Kovit Engineering of Sudbury.
Outotec is a mineral processing manufacturer based in Espoo. Kovit specializes in surface and underground mine tailings solutions and has 30 specialists in Sudbury.
In a recent release, Outotec said the acquisition complements its dewatering and tailings treatment solutions and services.

The world's most prolific gold producer, Barrick Gold, has announced a suite of refinements to its senior management team, abandoning its co-president-led senior management structure. Kelvin Dushnisky had been assigned as president of the company with immediate effect and former co-president Jim Gowans would, until his retirement, support the transition as a senior advisor to chairperson John Thornton. Dushnisky would have overall responsibility to execute the company's strategic priorities, with a focus on improving productivity and driving down costs.

Geoscientists in Iceland have produced the first realistic simulation of how an energy rich "magmatic intrusion" is created. The intrusions occur when a rising mass of viscous magma becomes stuck in the bedrock, and water above the intrusion reaches a "super-critical" temperature, so hot that it creates a reservoir which can produce massive amounts of geothermal electricity.
