David Harquail has announced that his family foundation is making a $10 million investment to support Laurentian University's Department of Earth Sciences and its Mineral Exploration Research Centre (MERC). The University's Board of Governors has unanimously decided to honour the Harquail family by renaming the Department of Earth Sciences as the Harquail School of Earth Sciences and associate ongoing MERC efforts with the Harquail name. A celebration of the Harquail family's generosity will be held in the coming weeks.

The mineral exploration community is welcoming news of a major mining research project.
Laurentian University has announced it's starting a seven-year initiative called Metal Earth.
The goal is to figure out more precisely where ore deposits are, making exploration less costly for companies. The president of the Sudbury Prospectors and Developers Association, Joshua Bailey, says it's great to see more than $100 million being spent on mining research.

No problem — this survey is for anyone interested in "Natural Channel" systems.
As a contribution to the 2016 Natural Channels Conference, the purpose of this survey is to gauge the role of Geomorphology in the science and application of "Natural Channel" assessment and stream corridor rehabilitation. The issue of professional regulation is also considered. While the focus is on applied geomorphology in Ontario, respondents from elsewhere in Canada and internationally are encouraged to contribute their perspectives. Everyone is welcome to participate.

The biggest gold producer is joining forces with an even larger tech giant to drag the traditional world of mining into the new millennium.
Barrick Gold has signed a deal with Cisco Systems for a "digital reinvention" of its global mining operations, the Toronto-based miner said in a statement. The partnership — struck between Barrick Executive Chairman John Thornton and Cisco Chairman John Chambers — will start with the Cortez mine in Nevada.

Welland is getting $4 million dollars in federal funding for improvements to its water and wastewater systems.
Vance Badawey, MP for Niagara Centre, along with St. Catharines MPP Jim Bradley and Mayor of Welland Frank Campion made the announcement.
The Ontario government is also committing $4 million dollars.
The Edgar & Elgin Area Sewer Separation and Watermain Replacement Project will separate the current combined sewer system into a new sanitary, and storm sewer system.

Almost nothing is left of the Gunnar uranium mine.
What didn't decay after the mine on the north shore of Lake Athabasca was abandoned more than five decades ago was later hauled away as part of a massive — and massively over-budget — clean-up operation.
Patricia Sandberg, whose father and grandfather worked for Gunnar Mining, and who spent eight years of her childhood at the northern Saskatchewan mine, worries it will be forgotten altogether.
