The Canadian Northern Development Agency — or CanNor — recently announced $7.4 million in funding for geoscience research across all three territories in Iqaluit.
Navdeep Bains, the minister responsible for CanNor, made the announcement at the Iqaluit airport, using the geotechnical surveys that informed the airport's construction as an example of how geoscience research can be used.

The successful Northern Ontario Mining Showcase will head back to the Metro Toronto Conference Centre next March, buoyed by $535,000 from the federal development agency. As the single largest pavilion at the annual PDAC (Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada) mining convention, the Temiskaming Shores-led regional showcase provides promotional space at the show for small and medium-sized mining suppliers to attend the world's largest mining conference to display their wares and network with a global mining audience.

Millions of years ago, a city-sized asteroid smashed into Labrador with so much force that it heated rocks to a whopping 2,370 C — the hottest temperature ever known for a rock on the surface of the Earth, scientists say.
The rock was found by Michael Zanetti, now a post-doctoral researcher in earth sciences at Western University in London, ON, in 2011. At that time, he was part of a mock "mission to the moon" at 28-kilometre-wide Mistastin Lake crater left behind by the powerful asteroid impact.

First Hurricane Irma blew through. Then the electricity went out. Then a work crew made an error while working on a pump station in the sewage system. And soon, 2,000 gallons of raw sewage was spilling onto a quiet residential street of ranch houses in Edgewater, a town south of Daytona Beach.
Benirose Demetita, administrator of Regency Elderly Care across the street, watched as city workers scrambled to contain the fetid mixture that spewed along Mango Tree Drive. "These guys from the city worked 24 hours trying to get that under control," Demetita said.

Although average year-long temperatures on Ross Island hover around -17C, including six months between April and September where they don't rise above -20C, the temperature in cave systems beneath the glaciers can reach 25C.
