During my year as President, a lot of members have told me what they think about APGO, and one thing that seems to really confuse people is how the role of being a professional meshes with the role of being a geoscientist.
For the first 30 years of my career, I was a mere geologist. I was trained in university to be a scientist, not a professional. Students today are still trained to be scientists rather than professionals, and now that we are a regulated profession, I see this as a problem. But that's a different story.

An abandoned well at Potter's Creek was recently capped to ensure that no contaminants could get into it and pose a risk to drinking water sources.

As copper miners start to slash spending and shutter mines because of the plunge in the price of the metal, experts who analyze the market in the base metal are suddenly getting a little more cheery.
They are seeing the potential for a rerun of 2003 when Chile's Codelco, the world's top copper producer stockpiled 200,000 tonnes of the metal that is used in everything from pipes to autos, providing the market with a supply shock that soon drove copper prices back up.

Liquid water exists on the surface of Mars during the planet's warmer seasons, according to new research published in Nature Geoscience. This revelation comes from new spectral data gathered by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, a spacecraft that studies the planet from orbit. The orbiter analyzed the chemistry of weird dark streaks that have been known to appear and disappear seasonally on the Martian surface. The analysis confirms that these streaks are formed by briny — or salty — water flowing downhill on Mars.
