Mississippi Mills is now the proud home of the only municipal geoheritage park in Canada after the Metcalfe Geoheritage Park was officially unveiled recently.
Local dignitaries, members of the Metcalfe Geoheritage Park Committee, experts in geology, and the public gathered on a sunny day by the water to christen what community member Neil Carleton calls, "a community showcase."
The park features rock specimens (limestone, sandstone, dolostone, etc.) on permanent display from around Lanark County and the Ottawa Valley, which have been arranged in a circular manner on concrete slabs, surrounded by young trees and a fully accessible walkway.

Biomining and bioremediation are one step closer to wider use in the mining industry with the creation of a new position at Laurentian University geared towards commercializing the technologies.
As of July 1, Nadia Mykytczuk is Laurentian University's first industrial research chair in mining, bioremediation and science communications.
Ontario is investing more than $630,000 through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation to create the five-year research chair position.

A study recently released in Ottawa says that water management is becoming increasingly complex, because of "intertwining stresses" like local budgeting, infrastructure planning, environmental considerations and climate change adaption. The study, New Solutions for Sustainable Stormwater Management in Canada, done by Sustainable Prosperity, an environmental think tank based at the University of Ottawa, says these factors and the way management services should be delivered is changing.

Two gold miners associated with financier Eric Sprott are raising eyebrows with their plans to join forces and create a mid-tier bullion producer that will span Canada and Australia.
Kirkland Lake Gold, which owns mines in northeastern Ontario, said recently that it has struck an all-stock $1.01 billion deal to buy Newmarket Gold, which owns mines in Australia.
The combined company will be known as Kirkland Lake Gold and will be headquartered in Toronto.

The local CRCA region, and much of eastern Ontario, has received close to average amounts of rainfall over the last two months, after a much less than average spring and summer.
In August, the area received about the normal amount of rainfall, though in only three rain events, leaving the rest of the month very dry. In September so far, we have received less than the normal amount of rainfall, but on a much more regular basis.
The rainfall received has definitely helped the drought conditions considerably. The vegetation is back to green, lake levels have been holding reasonably steady, and some streams have responded to the rain, and have been rising.

Company president Don Bubar is said to be "delighted" with the positive results coming from a preliminary economic assessment of its Separation Rapids lithium project.

Ottawa clean-tech firm BluMetric says it has won another contract in Ontario's mining sector to monitor water quality and prevent contamination. The company, which specializes in water and wastewater treatment, said the latest deal is worth $1.5 million and runs until July 2017. It follows a separate announcement in August for two new northern Ontario projects to analyze and restore mining sites valued at nearly $3 million.
