APGO
On behalf of the APGO's Council, I thank you for your continuing support of our Association and for
ensuring that the geoscience profession remains important to you, Ontario and Ontarians. This letter is
part of your notice regarding APGO's 2016 membership renewal.
APGO's role as Regulator is to identify and register qualified geoscientists, to promote the profession and
ensure continuing professional development of its members. Our role also requires us to manage complaints, and where necessary, to discipline members. Collectively, these activities serve to maintain the
credibility of the profession.

Substantially smaller and longer-lasting batteries for everything from portable electronic devices to electric cars could become a reality thanks to an innovative technology developed by University of Waterloo researchers.

As the senior gold miners begin to report third-quarter results, they find themselves stuck in a frustrating uphill battle.
Gold prices have moved steadily lower in the past three years, forcing miners to make deep cuts to operating costs and capital spending. Those moves were necessary to preserve liquidity, especially given that some companies (notably Barrick Gold) have too much debt. The cuts should pay off when the market turns.

A new NASA-led analysis of a moderate magnitude 5.1 earthquake that shook Greater Los Angeles in 2014 finds that the earthquake deformed Earth's crust across a broad region encompassing the northern Los Angeles Basin and northern Orange County. The shallow ground movements observed from this earthquake likely reflect strain accumulated on deeper faults, which remain locked and may be capable of producing future earthquakes.

Prices for iron ore, copper, nickel, aluminum and other metals have been in a multi-year slump amid sluggish growth in advanced economies and weakening expansion in emerging markets.
Unfortunately, the trend won't be fading anytime soon, Moody's Investor Service says in its latest global base metals outlook report, published recently.
