Ontario is continuing to provide incentives to junior exploration companies to foster training and capacity building for new and potential prospectors, and to encourage Indigenous Peoples to become more involved in prospecting or gain employment in the mineral development sector.
The extended Junior Exploration Assistance Program will allow the Ontario Prospectors Association to supply grants to qualifying junior exploration companies to complete early-stage exploration on properties in Ontario.

The Goodman School of Mines at Laurentian University in Sudbury has launched a new project management certificate program, which will offer training in resources, techniques, and practices needed to successfully oversee all aspects of managing industrial projects in a wide variety of fields across Northern Ontario.
"This new certificate program is just the latest example of the Goodman School's leadership in mining research and education," said Dr. Bruce Jago, founding executive director of the Goodman School of Mines, in a news release.

Despite previous indications of the contrary, De Beers Canada has announced that its Victor mine, the first and only commercial diamond operation in the province of Ontario, is shutting down in early 2019.
The mine, which began production in July 2008, was forecast to produce six million carats during its life and, according to De Beers, it has already exceeded those projections.
To date, Victor mine has yielded about seven million carats and it will continue to operate at full production throughout its remaining life, De Beers said.

At the westernmost point of Saints Rest Beach in Saint John's Irving Nature Park, the waves of the Bay of Fundy are obstructed by a cliff edge capped with lush forest. At first glance, the rocks that make up the jagged wall are unremarkable — they are grey, covered in patches of moss and similar to those of any beach in the region.
A closer look, however, will reveal small, white scratches on the rock face that speak to 15,000 years of the Earth's history — a souvenir of a time when the tip of an Ice Age glacier left an indelible impression on the stone.
