Environmental review panel selected for Marathon palladium mine project

A joint review panel has been established to carry out the environmental assessment (EA) process of a once-mothballed palladium mine project near the north shore of Lake Superior.
The federal and provincial governments are re-establishing the panel — shelved for the last six years — for the EA of Generation Mining's proposed Marathon Palladium Project, 10 kilometres north of the town of Marathon.

Plastic trap: New project pulls plastics out of the lakes, one floating garbage can at a time

An estimated 9,887 metric tonnes (22 million pounds) of plastics make their way into the Great Lakes every year. Now a new project aims not only to suck out some of that plastic but stop it from getting into the lakes in the first place.
It began last summer with Toronto Harbour’s installation of three Seabins — devices that look like trash cans in the water but behave like vacuum cleaners, said Christopher Hilkene, CEO of Pollution Probe.

Former piece of Pacific Ocean floor imaged deep beneath China

In a study that gives new meaning to the term “rock bottom,” seismic researchers have discovered the underside of a rocky slab of Earth’s surface layer, or lithosphere, that has been pulled more than 400 miles beneath northeastern China by the process of tectonic subduction. The study, published by a team of Chinese and U.S. researchers in Nature Geoscience, offers new evidence about what happens to water-rich oceanic tectonic plates as they are drawn through Earth’s mantle beneath continents.

New tool predicts geological movement and the flow of groundwater in old coalfields
University of Nottingham
A remote monitoring tool to help authorities manage public safety and environmental issues in recently abandoned coal mines has been developed by the University of Nottingham.
The tool uses satellite radar imagery to capture millimetre-scale measurements of changes in terrain height. Such measurements can be used to monitor and forecast groundwater levels and changes in geological conditions deep below the earth’s surface in former mining areas.

The connectivity of multicomponent fluids in subduction zones
Tohoku University
A team of researchers has discovered more about the grain-scale fluid connectivity beneath the earth's surface, shedding new light on fluid circulation and seismic velocity anomalies in subduction zones.
Lithospheric plates collide at convergent boundaries. Here, the less dense oceanic lithosphere subducts below the continental plate, and releases an abundance of water due to a progressive metamorphic reaction at high pressure and high temperature.
