Proposed New Rules for J and F Visa Holders: Action Alert
The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has proposed new rules for J and F visa holders that would limit their stay to only two or four years. ASPB opposes this concept, and has submitted comments urging the DHS to preserve the current duration of status approach. It is vital that DHS also hear from many individual plant scientists; learn more about how you may submit your own comments.

The Second Decade of Synthetic Biology: 2010–2020
    From Nature Comms
In 2020 synthetic biology turned 20 years old. Its first decade saw some impressive research papers, lots of visionary thinking and unprecedented excitement, but its second decade — from 2010 to 2020 — was when the hype really needed to be replaced by some real achievements. So how has it done?

A GRF–GIF Chimeric Protein Improves the Regeneration Efficiency of Transgenic Plants
    From Nature Biotechnology via Plantae
GRFs are growth regulating transcription factors that work as a complex with GRF-interacting factors (GIFs). Debernardi et al. designed a chimeric GRF/GIF fusion protein that accelerates regeneration of green shoots from transformed tissue, a key step in the production of transgenic plants.

The Secret of How the Venus Flytrap 'Remembers' When It Captures Prey
From Nature Plants via Ars Technica
Scientists are continuing to tease out the mechanisms by which the Venus flytrap can tell when it has captured a tasty insect as prey as opposed to an inedible object (or just a false alarm). There is evidence that the carnivorous plant has something akin to a short-term "memory," and a team of Japanese scientists has found evidence that the mechanism for this memory lies in changes in calcium concentrations in its leaves, according to a recent paper published in the journal Nature Plants.

Plants Communicate at a Molecular Level
From University of Erlangen-Nuremberg via Science Daily
Working together with researchers from the University of Tübingen, the University of Tromsø, the UC Davis and the Sainsbury Laboratory in Norwich, biologists from FAU have discovered how tomato plants identify Cuscuta as a parasite. The plant has a protein in its cell walls that is identified as "foreign" by a receptor in the tomato.
