China-US Forum Promotes Technology Transfer, Nov. 3-4
The 2014 China-US University Technology Transfer & Partnering Forum, scheduled Nov. 3 and 4 in Xi'an, China, will promote cross cultural exchange and business relationships between companies and universities in U.S. and China. AUTM President-elect Fred Reinhart will be among the speakers discussing the future of technology transfer in the U.S. and China. Reinhart also will provide attendees with information about how AUTM can assist in career development within the technology transfer profession.

Nevada-Reno Explores Commercial Drone Delivery

Australian-designed commercial drones are winging their way to the United States for high-tech testing at the University of Nevada-Reno as part of a new research and development partnership with a commercial delivery, unmanned-aerial-vehicle startup company. The company, Flirtey, conducted successful fully automated drone textbook-delivery tests in Sydney, Australia, earlier in the year.

Cincinnati Research Could Fast Track Drug to Cure Brain Tumors

Drugs designed to combat breast cancer might also prove effective in treating people with deadly brain tumors, according to researchers at the University of Cincinnati's Winkle College of Pharmacy. A study that began as the dissertation project of a doctoral candidate is so promising that the UC Intellectual Property office has filed a patent application, and the UC Technology Commercialization Accelerator has awarded a $40,000 incubator grant to a research team that is planning to conduct a clinical trial. Such funding is awarded for technologies that could result in startup companies.

Researchers Unlock New Mechanism in Pain Management
It's in the brain where we perceive the unpleasant sensations of pain, and researchers have long been examining how calcium channels in the brain and peripheral nervous system contribute to the development of chronic pain conditions. Neuroscientist Gerald Zamponi, Ph.D., and his team at the University of Calgary's Hotchkiss Brain Institute have discovered a new mechanism that can reverse chronic pain.

AUTM Launches BWP 500 Contest
AUTM is introducing the BWP 500 contest in September. The new initiative, which is available exclusively to AUTM members, is designed to help the association reach its goal of 500 technologies in the Better World Project database by the 2015 Annual Meeting.

AUTM members who enter technologies into the database during this monthly contest will be eligible to win a $100 gift certificate. In addition, their technologies will be considered for Featured Stories — professionally written articles that are hosted on the BWP website and promoted via AUTM's various media outlets.

AUTM FY2014 Salary Survey
Data collection is underway for the AUTM FY2014 Salary Survey. Like previous editions, this sixth biennial compensation survey will present robust data gathered from respondents (directors or their designees) at non-profit technology transfer offices.

Completing the survey is not difficult or time consuming, yet the benefits to AUTM members are substantial.

To ensure the confidentiality of the survey data, those of you who requested participation in the survey received an email directly from AUTM's vendor, Peerfocus, with the subject line "2014 AUTM Salary Survey Has Launched" from John Ritter under this email.

UNC Doubles Tech Licensing Revenue to Record $7.9 Million
WRAL TechWire
Licensing technologies created at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill generated $7,932,921 in income for the university in fiscal year 2014, more than double the highest amount of royalty income the university has received in a single year. The amount comes from licensing revenues by companies that use university-created technology and from the university's sale of stock it holds in successful startups.
