Social Media Assists in New Licensing Agreement for a
Temple Technology

Temple University
The use of the social media platform LinkedIn has led to the licensing of a Temple-created technology for the cleaning of water used in hydrofracking for natural gas extraction. Hydro Enviro Clean LLC, a Texas-based startup company, licensed the technology developed by Temple chemistry professor Daniel Strongin less than two years after its chief executive officer read a story posted on LinkedIn by Temple's Office of the Senior Vice Provost for Research.

Vanderbilt University has said its commercialization earnings have quadrupled over a three-year period — reaching more than $24.5 million for the fiscal year ending June 30.

UNC Medical Startups Receive $80,000 Grant
The Daily Tar Heel
Four University of North Carolina startup companies are getting an $80,000 boost thanks to a federal grant. The money is coming from Carolina KickStart, which is a program within the North Carolina Translational and Clinical Sciences Institute, a medical research center funded by the National Institutes of Health that distributes grants.

Yale Biotech Spinout Launches with $18 Million and a New
Approach to Cancer

Canaan Partners and 5AM Ventures are launching a new Yale spinout focused on a new approach to shutting down proteins. The two venture groups are putting up the lion's share of a $15 million Series A for New Haven-based Arvinas, which will also get into business with $4.25 million in backing from state agencies in Connecticut, including a $1 million equity buy-in from Connecticut Innovations.

Universities Struggle to Make Patents Pay
United States patent number 7,023,435 almost didn't happen. The application, which covered a way of imaging a surface, was rejected four times by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. But the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, which filed the patent, fought back — and prevailed.
