Scientists Create 'Feel Fuller' Food Ingredient

British scientists have developed an ingredient that makes foods more filling and say initial tests in overweight people showed that it helped prevent them gaining more weight. The ingredient, developed by researchers at London's Imperial College and at the University of Glasgow, contains propionate, a natural substance that stimulates the gut to release hormones that act on the brain to reduce hunger.

$22 Million Gift to Iowa State Helps Student Innovation Center

An anonymous couple recently donated $22 million to Iowa State University. The sum will be split with part of the donation going to the new Student Innovation Center and part to be made into an endowed dean's chair in the College of Human Sciences. The new Student Innovation Center will be receiving a large portion of the donation, said John McCarroll, University Relations executive director.

Cincinnati Launches Integrated Tech Transfer Model
The Office of Entrepreneurial Affairs and Technology Commercialization at the University of Cincinnati has been replaced by a "Commercialization Accelerator Model" after receiving a $1 million funding renewal boost from Ohio's Third Frontier Commission earlier this month. It is twice the amount the accelerator received from the Third Frontier at the time of its inception in 2012.

Queen Margaret University Launches New Food Innovation and
Development Center

A new Scottish center for food development and innovation has officially opened at Queen Margaret University's Edinburgh campus. The center aims to help Scottish food and drinks businesses with product development and analysis, ingredient development, improvements in product processing and preservation, nutritional analysis, shelf life testing and with consumer focus groups and taste panels.

UCLA Startup Advances Carbon-Nanotube Chips

Scientists have experimented for years with new materials for making computer chips, preparing for a day when silicon and other widely used materials outlive their usefulness. A UCLA startup company called Carbonics hopes to be among the first to make useful chips from carbon.

AUTM 2015 Eastern Region Meeting: Call for Topics
The AUTM Eastern Region Planning Committee invites you to suggest topics for the AUTM 2015 Eastern Region Meeting, which will take place Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 at the Raleigh Marriott City Center in Raleigh, North Carolina.

AUTM Announces BWP Contest Winner for November
Susan Patow, marketing associate at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, won a $100 gift certificate during the Association of University Technology Managers' BWP 500 contest for November. The new initiative, which is available exclusively to AUTM members, is designed to help the association reach its goal of 500 technologies in the Better World Project database by the 2015 Annual Meeting.

AUTM members who enter technologies into the database during this monthly contest will be eligible to win a $100 gift certificate. In addition, their technologies will be considered for Featured Stories — professionally written articles that are hosted on the BWP website and promoted via AUTM’s various media outlets.

WIPO to Host Training Seminar
The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) will host the training seminar, "Mediation in Disputes on R&D and Related Commercial Agreements," on March 19 and 20, 2015, in Brussels, Belgium.

The intensive, two-day training course will focus on the techniques of mediation and will be based on discussion groups and simulated mediation case studies. Participants will take active part in the exercises.

The seminar is organized by the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center and the European Liaison Office of the German Research Organisations (KOWI). It is supported by AUTM, the European Industrial Research Management Association (EIRMA), the Licensing Executives Society International (LESI), the Licensing Executives Society Benelux and The Horizon 2020 Model Consortium Agreement (DESCA).
