Team Led by Louisiana Tech Biomed Professor Gets NSF Funding

National Science Foundation funding to develop and commercialize artificially-manufactured cells and cell platforms for educational, research and industry application has been awarded to a team of scientists led by Mark DeCoster, the James E. Wyche III Professor in Biomedical Engineering at Louisiana Tech University.

West Virginia Cybersecurity Firm Gets $1.25 Million Investment

Cybersecurity company Confirmix has raised $1.25 million to support the commercialization of technology originally developed at West Virginia University. The university and the Morgantown, West Virginia-based startup firm announced the funding on Dec. 15. Confirmix will use the funding to develop biometric technology for consumer identity and authentication products.

Marquette Law Clinic to Offer Free Legal Services to Startups

In a move that could bolster the region's innovation efforts, Marquette University is launching a clinic that will provide free legal services to start-ups and entrepreneurs. The first such clinic in the area, it will provide services to aspiring companies ranging from high-tech startups to mom-and-pop grocery stores, said Nathan Hammons, a full-time faculty member and the clinic's director.

The AUTM Eastern Region Planning Committee invites you to suggest topics for the AUTM 2015 Eastern Region Meeting, which will take place Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 at the Raleigh Marriott City Center in Raleigh, North Carolina.

AUTM Announces BWP Contest Winner for November
Susan Patow, marketing associate at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, won a $100 gift certificate during the Association of University Technology Managers' BWP 500 contest for November. The new initiative, which is available exclusively to AUTM members, is designed to help the association reach its goal of 500 technologies in the Better World Project database by the 2015 Annual Meeting.

AUTM members who enter technologies into the database during this monthly contest will be eligible to win a $100 gift certificate. In addition, their technologies will be considered for Featured Stories — professionally written articles that are hosted on the BWP website and promoted via AUTM’s various media outlets.

WIPO to Host Training Seminar in March
World Intellectual Property Organization
The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) will host the training seminar, "Mediation in Disputes on R&D and Related Commercial Agreements," on March 19 and 20, 2015, in Brussels, Belgium.

The intensive, two-day training course will focus on the techniques of mediation and will be based on discussion groups and simulated mediation case studies. Participants will take active part in the exercises.

The seminar is organized by the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center and the European Liaison Office of the German Research Organisations (KOWI). It is supported by AUTM, the European Industrial Research Management Association (EIRMA), the Licensing Executives Society International (LESI), the Licensing Executives Society Benelux and The Horizon 2020 Model Consortium Agreement (DESCA).
