As of Tuesday morning, November 6, CAA's building at 50 Broadway in lower Manhattan has power, but the phones, internet, and heat are not operable. The office will remain closed until further notice. The situation, however, is being reviewed several times a day. More

In just the latest of many acts of goodwill in the New York art world following the devastating passage of Superstorm Sandy, the MoMA PS1 director and Museum of Modern Art curator at large, Klaus Biesenbach, has shared a document put together by the MoMA conservation staff for salvaging artworks damaged by water in an emergency. The twelve-page document, which includes information for drying services and document reprocessors, offers guidelines for the handling of water-damaged prints, photographs, and drawings, stabilizing archival and library materials after a flood, and removing mold from books and artworks. More

The first thing you noticed walking through the streets lined with art galleries between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues in Chelsea, on Wednesday, October 31, was the constant, undulating roar of generators and the hoses, in clumps of three or four, snaking out of just about every gallery, from which cold water that had come flooding in from the Hudson River now gushed into the street. Fuller's concerns-based model for teacher development, this study identifies concerns and strategies experienced by 103 online instructors in a six-week online professional-development course offered multiple times over a three-year period. The study reveals that online instructors identified concerns related to self, task, and impact. I recently went to dinner with six friends to talk careers. We all have PhDs in the humanities, but only one of us is working as a tenured professor. Of the remaining five: one of us started in a tenure-track job but left to find more satisfying work and better pay as an international insurance consultant. Two others left academe upon graduation—one teaches courses in writing and computers at a law firm and the other is a gender specialist at a nonprofit agency. Having spent three years in pursuit of the illusive tenure-track job, I suspended my own search to work as a research consultant. More

Positive Ideas for PhD Programs 4: New Forms of Dissertations, Part I

"Promote new kinds of dissertations." This is the longest of the suggestions, because it takes a while to explore. Practice-led PhDs have usually been fairly well tied to existing disciplines: usually they're in art history, aesthetics, or other philosophy, political science, anthropology, sociology, and history. Rarely, they're in other subjects such as chemistry. But all along, the promise has been that the dissertation could be something other than ordinary research. Some programs have achieved hybrid forms in which the dissertation works as part of the visual art, and others have mixed the research and the practice so they cannot be disentangled at all. But those experiments remain in the minority. This entry is an attempt to produce a schema for the kinds of dissertation that might, in theory, be produced in studio-art PhD programs. More
