In an apparent search for stability at a troubled agency, Mayor Rahm Emanuel today tapped Eugene Jones Jr. to serve as permanent CEO of the Chicago Housing Authority.
Jones has been the acting CEO since last June and, in a statement, Emanuel suggested he likes what he's seen so far.
"Gene already has made significant progress at the CHA by accelerating development deals and housing production to get more than 500 units under construction in just seven months time," Emanuel said. "He has cultivated relationships with residents and other stakeholders as he accomplishes CHA's goals of creating affordable housing and building vibrant mixed-income communities."

After nearly 20 years of vacancy, the big redevelopment plans for Chicago's Old Main Post Office have turned smaller ... much smaller.
Investor Bill Davies' latest idea for the landmark building along Congress Parkway now involves micro apartments. Davies plans to convert the space into 300 small apartment units ranging from 280 to 600 square feet, according to Ellen Phillips, managing broker of Loop Apartments.

Median rents for one-bedroom and two-bedroom units in the city are both up in January compared to a year ago, according to a new report. The report, from Zumper, put the median rent in Chicago for a one-bedroom at $1,970 in January, up 10.7 percent from January of 2015. Two-bedroom median rents in Chicago were $2,630, up 8.2 percent from the previous January, Zillow said.
The Near North Side had the most expensive rent for both one-bedroom and two-bedroom units: $2,260 and $3,180 respectively.
