William Briggs — Valley Oil Company

William Frederick Briggs, Jr., 85, of East Hampton, CT and Sarasota, FL, formally of South Glastonbury, passed away on Sunday, December 21, 2014 in Sarasota, FL. Born in Waterbury on July 5, 1929, he was the son of the late William F. Briggs and Dorothy (Porteous) Briggs. Bill grew up in Middletown, CT and married his high school sweetheart Barbara White, his beloved wife of 51 years. He proudly served as a Lieutenant JG in the US Navy during the Korean War. In the late 1950's, Bill moved to South Glastonbury, where he raised his family. He was the president and co-owner of Valley Oil Co. in Portland, CT. Valley Oil was a highly successful family business for over 85 years, servicing customers throughout CT. Bill truly cherished all of the summers spent with his family at his cottage on Lake Pocotopaug in East Hampton, CT. Bill was an avid golfer and a charter member of the Glastonbury Hills Country Club where he was the Senior Club Champion several times. He golfed for many years in the celebrity pro-am of the Greater Hartford Open where he played with many celebrities including Johnny Miller, Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino, and Arnold Palmer. He was very proud of the fact that he had five holes in one in his lifetime. Another of his passions was fishing. He had numerous "prize catches." Bill also loved following sports. Whether they won or lost, his love of the Red Sox, the Hartford Whalers, and the UCONN men's and women's basketball teams was unwavering. He is survived by his brother Robert Briggs of Haddam, his sister-in-law Marilyn Baillargeon, his daughters: Cynthia Thierfeld and her husband Jeffrey of Portland, Cathleen Glynn and her husband John of Marlborough, Carolyn Aubin and her husband David of Hebron, and his son William of Middletown. He is also survived by his ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren, who were the loves of his life. Bill's close friend, Hilda Siderman, held a special place in his heart. Along with his parents, Bill was predeceased by his son, Charles and his wife, Barbara. A private burial will be held at Pine Grove Cemetery in Middletown, CT and a Memorial Service celebrating his life will be held in the spring. Cathy Barber Drake Petroleum

Catherine A. Barber, 61, of Biddeford, Maine and formerly of Wethersfield, CT, passed away peacefully at her home on January 3, 2015 after battling cancer for more than a year. Cathy was born on October 05, 1953 in Brockton, MA to Forrest and Jacqueline Barber. She graduated from Cardinal Spellman High School in 1971. Cathy graduated from Brown University with a B.A. degree in 1975. Cathy grew up working in her father's gas stations as a child. She then followed suit by working in the petroleum industry for her entire career from 1975 to 2013. In her early years she was employed by companies like Atlantic Richfield, Herkimer Petroleum, Shell Oil company, and Petro Plus Inc. Her most recent career employers were L.E Belcher, Inc. and Drake Petroleum. She was also very active in a volunteer position with the New England Convenience Store Association (NECSA) from 2003 to 2012, serving as first a board member, then vice-president and finally president. During her 38 year career she was much admired and highly regarded by both her customers and the competition. Her uncanny knowledge of the industry resulted in a dedicated following of customers all over the state of Connecticut. She befriended many and helped them to succeed in both their businesses and personal lives. Dedication to helping others was a way of life for her. She will be sadly missed in the industry. Cathy was a dog and nature lover. She made it a habit to adopt and care for dogs from the local POA animal shelter in Connecticut. She had an endearing love for the ocean and especially Biddeford Pool Beach. Cathy is survived by her father Forrest; her loving husband of ten years, Michael Kosiba; her two sisters, Jacqueline Jablonski and her husband Paul of Naperville, IL, and Roxanne Madonna and her husband Albert of Tyngsboro, MA; a niece and nephew, Grace Madonna and Gabriel Madonna of Tyngsboro, MA; step-daughter Jaime Kosiba White and her husband Greg of San Antonio, TX and their son Kellan; and step-son Ryan Kosiba of San Antonio, TX. Cathy also leaves behind several aunts and uncles, many cousins and friends and her three loving Chihuahua-mix rescued dogs, Stella, Sonny and Simon. There will be no church or funeral service. A gathering of family and friends to celebrate Cathy's life will be planned at a later date.
