Toyota to share hydrogen fuel cell patents
Toyota chose the bully pulpit of the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas to announce that they are making thousands of patents relating to hydrogen fuel cells available on a royalty-free basis. There is little doubt that the development of these 5,680 patents represents millions of dollars of research investment. Many of the patents apply to Toyota's planned hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, the Mirai, which is on the docket for the 2016 model year.

New concept of fuel cell for efficiency, environment
R&D Magazine
The Center for Nanoparticle Research at the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) has succeeded in proposing a new method to enhance fuel cell efficiency with the simultaneous removal of toxic heavy metal ions. The direct methanol fuel cell (DFMC) has been a promising energy conversion device for electrical vehicles and portable devices. However, the inevitable carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning is one of the main factors reducing its performance. Furthermore, the hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) also present, is a harmfully toxic, carcinogenic heavy metal in the aquatic environment.

Toyota Mirai production to triple with $165 million investment
Sales expectations for the Toyota Mirai may be modes, but the automaker says it's investing an additional $165 million to triple production of their hydrogen fuel cell sedan. At last count Toyota had just 200 orders for the Mirai, but it now expects to exceed its initial allotment of 700 vehicles by the December 15th release date, reports Green Car Congress. Toyota had planned to produce just 700 Mirai fuel cell sedans through 2015, with 400 units earmarked for Japan, 50 units in Europe, and the remainder sent to Southern California, the only place in the U.S. with the necessary infrastructure.

Graphene can be used to collect hydrogen from moist ambient air to power fuel cells
Next Big Future
University of Manchester research suggests that the use of graphene or monolayer boron nitride can allow the existing membranes to become thinner and more efficient, with less fuel crossover and poisoning. This can boost competitiveness of fuel cells. You can put a hydrogen-containing gas on one side, apply small electric current and collect pure hydrogen on the other side. This hydrogen can then be burned in a fuel cell.
