Toyota seeks more hydrogen fuel cell cars for USA

Toyota's hydrogen fuel-cell car hasn't even gone on sale yet, but executives say they are already ordering more. Since the car, to be called the Mirai, made its debut late last year, Toyota has received about 16,000 "hand raisers" in the USA — expressions of interest in obtaining one. The cars will be leased for $499 a month.

Plug Power Inc shares slip after management structure change

Plug Power announced some significant changes to the structure of its corporate management team this morning. The hydrogen fuel cell system manufacturer added Tim Cortes, who joins with the title of Vice President of Hydrogen. Cortes' responsibilities will include overseeing Plug Power’s GenFuel segment. He will oversee customer, supplier and partner interactions and focus on growing the company's share of the hydrogen fuel market.

Upp hydrogen fuel cell charges your gadgets

There have been several hydrogen chargers that have hit the market over the last few years seeking to keep your gadgets charged without needing a battery or a power outlet. A new hydrogen charger has turned up called the Upp and it has a higher power capacity than similar chargers that have come before it. The Upp has a power capacity of 25Wh, which is about twice the capacity of similar chargers that came before it.

Cars powered by fuel cells or batteries are only as clean as the electricity used to produce the power source. Proponents of hydrogen fuel cells argue that fuel cells have an edge over batteries, because hydrogen can ultimately be made cleaner with innovations in hydrogen production. Steam reforming of natural gas is the most common source of hydrogen and for the most part it is still the most cost-effective process for large-scale production of hydrogen.

Japan spending big on hydrogen fuel ahead of Olympics

Green Car Reports says the Japanese government is planning to spend $385,000,000 on hydrogen fuel infrastructure ahead of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. The money will be used to construct 35 hydrogen fueling stations in and around Tokyo. The government also wants Toyota and Honda to have at least 6,000 hydrogen powered fuel cell vehicles on the road in Japan by then.
