Hyundai to unveil hydrogen fuel cell vehicle at show

Hyundai North America CEO John Krafcik said the Korean automaker plans to unveil a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle next week at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Krafcik, who spoke at the automaker's research and development center near Ypsilanti, also said that hydrogen fuel cell technology has a number of advantages over battery electric cars.

Hydrogen fuel gains more momentum in Europe

Hydrogen fuel may begin gaining significant momentum in Europe thanks to a new consortium called the H2TRUST. The consortium is comprised of nine European organizations, including Air Products, McPhy Energy, SOL SpA, and the European Hydrogen Association, as well as others. The consortium was co-founded by the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking, which exists to promote the use of hydrogen fuel and fuel cell technology throughout Europe.

The Aston Martin Hybrid Hydrogen Rapide S won the Powertrain of the Year award at the Professional Motorsport World (PMW) Expo 2013 Awards in Cologne. The accolade comes after a successful year for the hydrogen Rapide S-produced through a collaboration between Aston Martin and Austrian firm, Alset Global-which became the first car to complete a zero- CO2 emission lap of the Nürburgring race track back in May.

Toyota vows fuel cell model by 2015 in green push

Toyota is promising a mass-produced fuel cell car by 2015 in the latest ambitious push to go green by an industry long skeptical about the super-clean technology that runs on hydrogen. Satoshi Ogiso, the Toyota Motor executive in charge of fuel cells, said the vehicle is not just for leasing to officials and celebrities but will be an everyday car for ordinary consumers, widely available at dealers.

Researchers at Stanford University in the U.S. have succeeded in fabricating a corrosion-resistant photoanode for use in photoelectrochemical cells (PECs) — devices that produce hydrogen when exposed to sunlight in a process called "water splitting." The new electrode, which is made of a silicon-based semiconductor coated with an ultrathin layer of nickel, could help in the development of large-scale hydrogen generators in the future.

An innovative pilot plant near Fort Saskatchewan is producing hydrogen — the key to powering fuel cells and upgrading bitumen — with frontier technology brought from a U.S. government laboratory in Idaho. "I look at this as the holy grail, something everybody has been seeking, a way to produce hydrogen from any carbon.
