Scientists discover recipe for quick hydrogen production

French scientists have uncovered a new way to produce large amounts of hydrogen that could one day give way to cheaper production of the clean fuel source. Presenting the study at the American Geophysical Union's annual meeting, the researchers will explain how they were able accelerate a natural process that occurs when water and the mineral olivine mix under extreme pressures and temperatures.

Ballard signs MOU with Van Hool for further zero emission fuel cell bus deployments

Ballard Power Systems has announced the signing of a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Van Hool NV, Europe's fourth largest bus manufacturer, in support of the manufacture and further deployment of zero emission fuel cell buses. By February 2014 the companies plan to jointly respond to the call for proposals under the EU Hydrogen Fuel Cell Joint Undertaking, and also plan to jointly respond to other future calls for proposals under the Horizon 2020 program.

Report: Fuel cells market worth $7.52 billion by 2020

The stationary fuel cell market is forecast to show massive growth, thanks to increasing interest in the technology and government subsidy programs, climbing from $390m in 2012 to $7.52 billion by 2020, at a Compound Annual Growth Rate of 44.7 per cent. According to the company's latest report, the use of fuel cells is expected to increase significantly in several applications.

Plug Power Inc skyrocketed 42.52 per cent to new high, again, following a 60.60 per cent gain after saying it expects to be profitable next year. The fuel-cell maker that hasn't had net income since its 1999 initial public offering predicts fourth quarter orders may reach $40 million and the recurring revenue from service contracts and cost cuts are expected to help it reach profitability in 2014.

Hyundai teases Intrado concept with hydrogen fuel-cell powertrain

Hyundai has announced the Intrado concept which will be introduced at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show. Judging by the teaser photo, we are dealing with a compact crossover which represents Hyundai's first concept using the Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design language. The concept's styling was developed by the firm's European design team which was supervised by Peter Schreyer who is known for drawing the original Audi TT and also by its recent (and successful) work at Kia.

New device harnesses sun and sewage to produce hydrogen fuel

A novel device that uses only sunlight and wastewater to produce hydrogen gas could provide a sustainable energy source while improving the efficiency of wastewater treatment. A research team led by Yat Li, associate professor of chemistry at the University of California, Santa Cruz, developed the solar-microbial device and reported their results in a paper published in the American Chemical Society journal ACS Nano. The hybrid device combines a microbial fuel cell (MFC) and a type of solar cell called a photoelectrochemical cell (PEC).

Proton Motor Fuel Cell launches higher power fuel cell stack

Proton Motor Fuel Cell GmbH (Proton) has announced the launch of a higher power fuel cell stack, after a 3-year development period. This latest generation of stack has been created in order to access the markets for higher power classes than its current model. The new stack is called PM400 and is currently designed for an output of up to 30 kW.

Air Liquide plans for long-term growth in hydrogen-powered cars

Air Liquide is expanding its business building filling stations for hydrogen-powered cars as it predicts growing demand for the vehicles that emit only water by using fuel cells to generate electricity. "In territories like Germany or France, you need about 1,000 stations" for full coverage, Pierre-Etienne Franc, head of the Advanced Business and Technologies unit said.

Element 1 Corp., a manufacturer of hydrogen generators for PEM fuel cells and other industrial applications, announced approval of the application for Conformité Européenne Declaration of Conformity for the e1 H-series and S-series hydrogen generator. Though e1 hydrogen generators are already providing reliable, pure hydrogen in installations around the world, the CE mark of approval will further strengthen the value of the H- and S-series, especially in the European Economic Area market.
