Canada health report card ranks B.C. 1st, Nunavut last

British Columbia is home to the healthiest Canadian population, while residents in Newfoundland and Labrador and the three territories are the least healthy, according to report card released Thursday by the Conference Board of Canada. The report compared residents' health in each province and territory, while comparing Canada as a whole to the U.S., Japan, Australia and 12 countries in Western Europe.

Waiting time pushes Fredericton woman to Colombia for surgery

A Fredericton woman says the province could learn a few lessons in health care from Colombia. Sharon Burke is in the South American country, recovering from k​nee surgery. She decided to get the operation in Medellin after learning it could take up to three years to get surgery in New Brunswick. Burke says her problems started about four years ago after a slight injury to her knee. Doctors treated her injury with cortisone shots and synthetic joint fluid and the pain went away.

7 more hospitals in Northeast go virtual

Seven more hospitals in northeastern Ontario have been added to the Virtual Critical Care Unit at Health Sciences North. Emergency departments at Espanola Regional Hospital and Health Centre, Manitoulin Health Centre (Little Current and Mindemoya sites), Blind River District Health Centre, Chapleau Health Services, Mattawa Hospital and Lady Dunn Health Centre in Wawa have joined HSN's unit.

Alberta misses long-term targets for surgery waits by a long shot

Alberta's provincial health body is poised to miss long-term wait time targets for bum knees, ailing shoulders and throbbing gall bladders as the clock runs out on an ambitious five-year action plan. Titled "Becoming the Best," the plan was released November 2010 and set numerous targets including waits for non-emergency surgeries. The overall goal was to reduce waits to 14 weeks for all surgeries by March 2015, but specific attention was paid to knee and hip replacements, coronary artery bypasses and cataract surgery.

Québec solidaire exige le retrait du projet de loi 20
Le député de Québec solidaire (QS), Amir Khadir, et des médecins omnipraticiens du Québec demandent le retrait du projet de loi 20 qui risque, selon eux, de mettre en péril la qualité des soins de santé. En plus de mettre en danger la pratique médicale, ce projet de loi, qui impose des quotas de patients sous peine de sanctions, fera fuir les médecins, dénoncent-ils à l'unisson.
