Canadian health care is far from universal

Here's a disturbing reality. Health care in Canada isn't as good as you think it is. How much you pay for the drugs you need depends on where you live. You'll wait a lot longer for a knee replacement or cataract surgery if you live in some provinces than in others. The same goes for getting a doctor's appointment.

If specialists can't find jobs, the health system needs radical surgery

It was only a decade ago that headlines in Canada were filled with pessimism about the nation's critical doctor shortage. Wait times for specialists were increasing, doctors were leaving for the U.S. and patients couldn't find a family doctor. Yet, a recent study from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada notes that now, one in six new health specialists cannot find work.

The Canadian medical profession is facing major upheaval

I don't think there's ever been a greater time for our profession to shine than right now, Louis Francescutti, the new president of the Canadian Medical Association, said at the outset of his inaugural address at the 146th annual meeting of the CMA. There are 78,000 doctors in Canada; that is more than there ever has been, in raw numbers and per capita. Physician income has climbed steadily in recent years; in some parts of the profession, gross income is up 30 per cent over the past decade.

Ottawans lured to NY hospital for hip, knee replacements

A hospital in upstate New York is marketing speedy knee and hip replacements to patients in Ottawa. The Alice Hyde Medical Centre is hoping to capitalize on wait times for knee and hip replacements in Ottawa, which is more than 220 days on average. The centre is located in Malone, New York, about a two-hour drive southeast of Ottawa.

Alberta : Enquête sur la qualité des soins à domicile
Services de Santé Alberta (AHS) a accepté de se soumettre à l'enquête du Conseil de la qualité de soins de l'Alberta (HQCA ou Health Qualitiy Council of Alberta) sur les soins à domicile à travers la province. HQCA vérifiera si AHS utilise des méthodes adéquates pour s'assurer que des soins de qualité sont donnés aux patients. L'agence doit également évaluer comment AHS vérifie l'application des normes à cet effet.
