The Council at its recentl meeting collectively voiced its support for scaling back a year-old "community fund grant" experiment that doled out small chunks of cash to many nonprofits in favor of greater and more dedicated funding toward a few organizations that deliver core services typically administered by a city's parks and recreation department.

For the third year in a row, the National Recreation and Park Association is collaborating with The Walt Disney Company, including Disney Citizenship, Disney|ABC Television Group and ESPN, to help fund local park improvement projects in 16 U.S. cities through the national Meet Me at the Park campaign. While there may be huge monetary savings to be found in using artificial turf over real grass, one major component used to create the fields and playgrounds has some worried about the health hazards for children who spend a great deal of time on the playing surface.

Florida's North Port City Commission decided recently to seek a more versatile option than a 50-meter competition swimming pool for an aquatic center at Butler Park. Instead, the board unanimously voted to ask consultant Kimley-Horn and Associates to design an aquatic center similar to one built in Rogers, Arkansas, that features a 25-yard pool that would be suitable for most high school and college swim meets.
