Napa finds new money to replace skate park

Despite a quarter-million-dollar financial hurdle, the city still is moving full speed ahead on building a new skate park. Larry Mazzuca, director of Parks and Recreation Services, said the city can use more park fees from developers to design and build the skate park in the absence of money from the former Napa Community Redevelopment Agency, which the state dissolved this year. About $1.2 million already had been slated to be taken from the city's parks fund to assist in construction of the project, estimated to cost $1.4 million, Mazzuca said.

Sacramento has received a $5,000 cash grant from national nonprofit Keep America Beautiful Inc. as part of a nationwide effort sponsored by Waste Management that encourages local solutions to improving community environments. Waste Management representatives applied for the grant earlier this year.

Santa Ana park to focus on health, wellness

Residents near Fourth Street and Broadway in Santa Ana can look forward to having an outdoor space to call their own later this year. Latino Health Access, a nonprofit organization, is building the first park and community center in the area. Projected to open in October, the park is a response to parents who expressed concerns about the lack of outdoor places for their children to play. It took more than seven years for Latino Health Access to get approval and start building.

Milpitas budget passes; 52 workers to lose jobs

More than 50 City of Milpitas employees will be laid off, city departments and programs reorganized, and parks and street maintenance work outsourced in order to close a projected $9.2 million general fund shortfall next fiscal year, beginning July 1. In response to layoffs, Milpitas Public Works Department crews and members of their unions loudly protested outside Milpitas City Hall. Protesting workers whistled, chanted slogans and loudly beat a large drum under the shadow of a giant inflatable rat named "Tom," referring to Milpitas City Manager Tom Williams.

Due to the economy, the way that many American families accomplish a budget vacation each year is by visiting state and national parks. Naturally, your vacation can go wrong if you do not check to see if the park will be open. This can be a little bit tricky because some parks are open in the springtime and will be closed in the summer. Derby Park skatepark changes draw skaters' concerns

Like a hard slam on the concrete, Santa Cruz skateboarders were shocked to find Derby Park skatepark closed for repairs. Rumors swirled on Facebook and Instagram about the demise of Derby, which was built in the mid-1970s and holds a special place in skate lore. City parks officials said they would try to preserve its curves and character. Essentially, the entire skatepark is getting a 4-inch-thick overlay of rebar and concrete. The project is expected to be complete by May 17.

This storied adobe mansion outside Los Angeles was once a getaway for California's last governor under Mexican rule, a landowner so wealthy he called the nearly 9,000 acres of land around it his "ranchito." Now, state budget cuts have reduced supporters of Pio Pico State Historic Park to begging for recyclables to cash in to keep the gates to the 1850s landmark from closing.

Fee hikes come to state parks

A slew of camping fee increases for state parks went into effect May 1 to help raise new revenue for the cash strapped California Department of Parks and Recreation. At Malibu Creek State Park, visitors will have to pay $45 a night for family camp sites, a $10 increase for the plots that can be occupied by a maximum of eight people, according to a press release.

After 40 years of park work in four California cities, longtime CPRS member Doug Stafford celebrated his retirement on April 16. For the past 24 years, he has been Parks Superintendent with the City of Monterey.
Susan Cannan, Assistant to the City Manager/Director of Community Services, is retiring after working for 32 years in local government. Her most current agency was with the City of Laguna Beach. She also has worked for the cities of Los Angeles, Cerritos, Poway, Irvine and Dana Point.
Congratulations to Dr. Bill Hendricks, Professor and Head, Recreation, Parks, & Tourism Administration Department, Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo! He will receive Cal Poly's 2012 Distinguished Scholarship Award at their Distinguished Scholarship Award Colloquium on Wednesday, May 30.

Research brief shows school recreational facilities encourage physical activity
Promoting Physical Activity through the Shared Use of School and Community Recreational Resources summarizes research on the sharing of athletic and recreational facilities between schools and communities.
The Farmers Market Promotion Program offers grants to help improve and expand domestic farmers' markets, roadside stands, community-supported agriculture programs, agri-tourism activities, and other direct producer-to-consumer market opportunities.
