New Milpitas park named after Filipino-American farmworkers who led historic Delano Grape Strike
The Milpitas Beat
Recently, in a unanimous vote, the Milpitas City Council approved a recommendation to name a new city park the Delano Manongs Park. This followed a naming subcommittee meeting on March 2 where Mayor Carmen Montano and Vice Mayor Evelyn Chua recommended to Council that the park be named. The park's name comes from the Delano Manongs, a historic group of Filipino farmworkers. As a result of the Delano Manongs' efforts, American laborers saw vast improvements in their wages and working conditions. Read More

Santa Maria City Council votes to move forward with funding plan for new sports complex

The Santa Maria City Council voted to move forward with a grant application that would potentially provide funding to develop a new multi-use sports complex in the city. The vote, 5-0 in favor, approved the filing of an application that, if approved, would provide up to $6 million in federal funding for the proposed project. Read More

SF leaders back name change for Golden Gate Park's Stow Lake

Golden Gate Park's Stow Lake is named after an unapologetic antisemite — but it might not be for long. The San Francisco Board of Supervisors is calling on the Recreation and Park Commission to reconsider the name of Stow Lake, kicking off a monthslong review process that will include ample opportunity for public feedback and brainstorming. The lake is named after William W. Stow, who served as speaker of the State Assembly in the mid-19th century. Read More

When the 6th Street Viaduct opened last summer, Angelenos massed in revelry — so much so that authorities shut down the bridge for several nights because of street takeovers and other dangerous activity. In a community starved of public gathering spaces, the bridge near Boyle Heights became one of its own. Fullerton residents looking for a new local hike to conquer can now visit West Coyote Hills Initial Trails, following a ribbon-cutting ceremony held at Sunny Hill Church of Christ to celebrate the trails' opening to the public. The City of Fullerton purchased two plots of 24.1 acres of West Coast Hills in 2021 for $18.04 million from Chevron-owned Pacific Coast Homes, a former oil field. Read More
