The City of Bakersfield, Recreation and Parks Department is a finalist for the 2014 National Gold Medal Awards for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management. The Gold Medal Awards program honors communities in the U.S. that demonstrate excellence in parks and recreation through long-range planning, resource management, volunteerism, environmental stewardship, program development, professional development and agency recognition. The City of Bakersfield is a finalist in the Class II population category of 150,000 — 400,000.

One year ago, Tooele County nearly hit rock bottom during what one county commissioner called the "perfect financial storm." Now, taxpayers are still paying back more than $4.5 million in interfund loans for a major sports complex that was bleeding money. The interfund loans — or cash loaned from one fund to another — are subject to repayment, but county officials say there was no repayment plan in place at the time the loans were made.

Valley-Wide solves Menifee's parks riddle — for now
The Press-Enterprise
The smoke has cleared in the skirmish to determine who will run Menifee's parks, with the Valley-Wide Recreation and Park District standing tall and proponents of a city-controlled approach defeated — at least temporarily. City staff and Valley-Wide officials are negotiating a three-year contract after the city council approval a deal which will go into effect July 1, making the sprawling special district responsible for operating the parks and recreation facilities on Menifee's west side.
