    Amid towering redwoods and tweeting birds, rangers removed a "Closing Due to Budget Cuts" sign at Portola Redwoods State Park, saving yet another park from the closure list just days before California was scheduled to shutter dozens of beaches and campgrounds. More

    According to an article in the San Jose Mercury News, the 2,800-acre Santa Cruz Mountains getaway southwest of Cupertino became the 31st park officially saved from the list of 70 parks. The article quotes Ruth Coleman, the head of California's Department of Parks & Recreation, saying "We are over 30 now. I would expect we can get to 50. My fantasy is to get to 60." What did it take? A donation of $100,000 from Save the Redwoods League, the Peninsula Open Space Trust and the Portola & Castle Rock Foundation. More

    Recreation and Park District receives $5,000 award

    July Parks and Recreation Month in Millbrae

    With the promise of warmer weather and summer sun, the Millbrae City Council has proclaimed July 2012 as Parks and Recreation Month. According to the proclamation, 98 percent of California households reported visiting a park in the past year at least once. Millbrae boasts 13 parks for recreational use by residents and visitors.     Congratulations to the Petaluma Friends of Recreation. They qualified for a $12 million ballot initiative for parks, pools and playgrounds. It will be placed on the November city ballot as a parcel tax. Good luck to them.
