The National Park Service turns 97 on Aug. 25

On Sunday, Aug. 25, the National Park Service turns 97 years old. To celebrate, admission to all national parks will be free so that everyone can join in the festivities taking place coast-to-coast. "National parks belong to all Americans, and we invite everyone to join us and celebrate this special day," said National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis. "From kite-building demonstrations at Wright Brothers National Memorial, to a river paddle at New River Gorge National River or a scenic railroad ride at Steamtown National Historic Site, America's national parks offer something for the whole family."

If the USA is starting to get a handle on childhood obesity, as federal health officials said, what might we finally be doing right? Three trends are being held up by health experts as encouraging developments: programs to get kids to exercise more, such as first lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move campaign; an increase in breast-feeding; and improvements in the nutritional content of foods provided to low-income women and children by the federal government.

After Wilsonville, Hillsboro bee deaths, Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District looks to create pollinator haven
The Oregonian
June was a bad month for Oregon bees. First, an estimated 50,000 bees died in that parking lot after trees were sprayed with Safari, an insecticide used to control aphids. Then, just days later, hundreds of bees were found dead under a linden tree in downtown Hillsboro. The tree also had been treated with Safari, though the Oregon Department of Agriculture has not yet confirmed the cause of the Hillsboro bee deaths.
