California State Parks commemorates the 1864 establishment of the first state park in the world. On June 30, 1864, President Abraham Lincoln signed a bill granting 39,000 acres of Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Big Tree Grove to the state of California. Foundation gives $50,000 for Katahdin region tourism program

People looking to work in tourism-based jobs in the Katahdin region could get a major boost from a new community college program that may be available next spring, officials said recently. The Quimby Family Foundation, one of the backers of a proposed national park, gave a $50,000 grant to Eastern Maine Community College in Bangor to help develop the two-year program at the Katahdin Region Higher Education Center in East Millinocket, Maine.

And with another busy summer winding down, it seems an appropriate time to extend them some well-deserved recognition for the excellent job they do — every day, year round. "They" would be the staff of the city of Rio Rancho Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services and Director Jay Hart, who, despite some very tight budgets at City Hall, manage to provide creative, top-notch programs and services year after year.

Students — Apply NOW for a CFPR Scholarship
Park & Recreation Scholarship applications are due in October.

The California Foundation for Parks and Recreation's Scholarship Committee manages and coordinates scholarships to assist noteworthy students fulfill their goal of entering the park and recreation profession. The committee annually awards approximately 20 scholarships to junior, senior and graduate level students majoring in recreation, parks and leisure studies throughout the state of California. Students apply during October; they are selected in December; notified of their awards in January; and are awarded their scholarship at the annual conference in March. Award amounts are generally between $1,000 and $2,000. On occasion, an outstanding student has been the recipient of more than one scholarship.

Application forms (click here to download the 2014 form) must be completed by the candidate and submitted prior to the posted deadline date.
