San Francisco's Golden Gate Park to transform into winter wonderland light exhibit for 150th anniversary

Either by pure imagination or in movie form, we've all wondered what it would be like to be transported to the middle of an enchanted forest. This winter, you just have to look in Golden Gate Park.
Designed by San Francisco-based artist Charles Gadeken, "Entwined" will be a first-of-its-kind art exhibit that transforms Peacock Meadow into a spectacular show of light structures and winding roads of flickering color.

Renaming state parks can tell a more inclusive history of California

The California Department of Parks and Recreation recently announced its plan to identify and act on discriminatory and dehumanizing names currently used in its parks. As former California State Park and Recreation commissioners, we heartily applaud this initiative to redress and heal California’s historic legacy of racism and discrimination as reflected in our parks.

Plans to redesign San Jose's St. James Park move forward despite setbacks

Despite setbacks stemming from the pandemic, steps to create a reimagined St. James Park in downtown San Jose are moving forward.
Plans to revamp the struggling downtown park include building a performing arts pavilion, playground, dog park, picnic area and café. The idea, organizers said, is to make St. James Park a recreational focal point of downtown San Jose.

Los Al announces Halloween contest decorating winners

The Los Alamitos Recreation and Community Services Department hosted its first annual Halloween Decorating Contest sponsored by Ganahl Lumber on Tuesday, October 27. The community was encouraged to decorate the outside of their home using Halloween decorations and festive lights.

City Council discusses homelessness in community
Selma Enterprise
Selma's City Council met for over three hours recently in a Zoom meeting at Selma City Hall. Much of the meeting centered on the homelessness problem. Recreation and Community Services Department Director Mikal Kirchner reported on the Community Cares Homeless Coalition, which was formed by a previous administration but started up again recently.

History In Our Parks Quick Survey
The AASLH History in Our Parks Task Force is working to identify the unique needs and challenges of operating a history-related entity (museum, historic site, collection, archeological site, cemetery, landscape, etc.) that is part of a park and recreation agency (city, county, etc.). In doing this, the task force wants to gather data on such entities. To help with these efforts, please complete the brief survey.

Online courses now available!
This 'blended learning' environment will include 12 hours of pre-recorded learning modules, a 4-hour virtual training course with a live instructor, and a computer-based exam offered either at a professional testing site or online* from your home.
Playing outdoors is a major component in the health and wellness of our children. And it is our responsibility to ensure safe, enjoyable play areas for all. CPRS, in conjunction with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) are offering the Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) course and certification to properly train and certify you and your staff to recognize and prevent potential playground hazards. Courses are designed for park and recreation staff, school districts, childcare facilities, health departments, landscape architects, playground manufacturers, installers, contractors, insurance firms, homeowners' associations and more.
