CPRS Opens Recruitment for New Maintenance School Regents
Have you completed first and second year at Maintenance School? Consider being a regent. Our regent application process is an online process with supplemental attachments. Wait your turn for the swings at Boston's adult playground

An adult playground is Boston's latest urban activity sensation in the Seaport District. People are flocking to the three-acre site adjacent to the Boston Convention and Exhibitors Center, with its set of 20 lighted oval swings, bocce, ping pong, beanbag toss, Adirondack chairs, a sound stage and open-air bar. And the most interesting feature from an urban design perspective? The wildly successful Lawn on D Street, a partnership of Sasaki and Utile with HR&A Advisors, wasn't planned years in advance.

Paving Hillside Trails raises objections from residents
Waterloo Chronicle
A resident near the Hillside Trails system in Waterloo, Ontario, said he and others are worried about the impact that paving the trails could have on local users. Paul Raymond, who lives on a nearby street, said area residents are worried about the environmental harm of paving the trails, and there are also concerns about speeding cyclists using the trail once it is paved, posing a risk to walkers around some of the sharp corners.

Dick Streeper, 81, 'Rose Man' founded Balboa Park garden, dies
San Diego Union-Tribune
For any visitors to Balboa Park who've stopped to smell the roses in the rose garden along Park Boulevard, they have Dick Streeper to thank. Streeper, well-known as the "Rose Man," founded the Inez Grant Parker Memorial Rose Garden, which was dedicated in 1975. Streeper died of natural causes, including pneumonia and kidney failure, Oct. 14 at San Diego Medical Center/Kaiser Foundation Hospital in San Diego. He was 81.

Construction starts on Golden Gate Park soccer fields project
The San Francisco Appeal
An opponent of a soccer fields renovation project that was the subject of a ballot measure in a recent election staged a sit-in protest in response to the start of construction on the fields. San Francisco Recreation and Parks officials quickly launched construction on the Beach Chalet soccer fields after a measure supporting the project appeared to win a solid majority and a measure opposing it looked set for failure.

New Colorado park has something for everyone, including mini incline

The Challenge Staircase was conceived as a kind of an Incline Jr. for Douglas County, Colorado's outdoors set, it's among the jaw-dropping amenities at the newly opened Philip S. Miller Park, which opened recently. In the park's cavernous $21 million field house, revelers can play soccer and football on fields with state-of-the-art artificial turf; jump around in a play area boasting 16 trampolines; play video golf using real clubs and a life-size projection screen; and take a dip in a pool equipped with a water slide, lap lanes and a simulated whirlpool with rushing currents of water.

New Fair Play Act Toolkit Materials — Ensuring Gender Equity in California Community Sports Programs
Fair Play for Girls in Sports, a project of the Legal Aid Society-Employment Law Center, unveiled new toolkit materials for the Fair Play in Community Sports Act (AB 2404) to help community members and park and recreation departments achieve gender equity in local sports programs.

NFL Play 60 Grant Deadline Extended
In a previous P&R Weekly, we publicized an after-school physical activity program grant for NFL PLAY 60 After-School Kickoff. The deadline for this grant has now been extended to Nov. 27, 2014!

The grant actually offers two opportunities:
  1. A $7,500 grant that can provide support to ANY of your after-school physical activity programs — not just football!
  2. If interested, you can also request NFL FLAG official flag football kits

Eligible applicants are local park and recreation sites with after-school programs in 12 NFL markets. San Diego is one of these markets!
