Ortega Park update: City of Santa Barbara says plans almost 'shovel ready'

The final plans for Ortega Park’s estimated $14 million makeover are nearly “shovel ready,” according to Project Manager Justin Van Mullem, who revealed the latest updates during a community event hosted by the City of Santa Barbara at the Eastside park’s Welcome House over the weekend.
An overall plan was approved through the city’s Planning Commission more than a year ago, but in that time, city staff have held several community meetings to nail down specific plans for the murals, swimming pool, and proposed skate park.

Park District to receive $3 million for public access at new Thurgood Marshall Regional Park
East Bay Regional Park District
The East Bay Regional Park District Board of Directors recently unanimously voted to advance efforts to secure funding for development of the first public access point at the new Thurgood Marshall Regional Park – Home of the Port Chicago 50. The Park District was awarded a $3 million direct appropriation in the California state budget, signed by Governor Gavin Newsom on June 30, 2022. The $3 million budget request was submitted by Assembly Member Timothy Grayson, D-Concord.

As climate change progresses, trees in cities struggle

As the driest summer in Seattle’s record books ended, trees across the city were sounding silent alarms. It was the latest in a string of Seattle summers in the last decade, including a record-breaking heat dome in 2021, to feature drier conditions and hotter temperatures that have left many trees with premature brown leaves and needles, bald branches and excessive seeding –- all signs of stress.

Child care could be coming to a city park near you soon

Voters overwhelmingly passed Measure H to allow child care at San Diego parks and rec centers, and now city officials and childcare advocates are working on what happens next.
That includes Councilmember Raul Campillo, who championed Measure H. His office has already identified 72 city-owned sites, including 42 parks and recreation centers, that could be leased to child care businesses.
Previously, city parks and recreation centers could not house child care businesses, but Measure H changed the city’s charter to allow it.
